This was based on an article in a magazine a few years ago, Wood I think. I did a couple then for the daughters and was asked a few weeks ago for another one. This is the last of the precious spalted Hackberry that I have been hoarding. The finish is Formsbys Tung Oil Finish.
Mother Nature made the nice Lantana's, I wish I could do as well with wood.

Re: Hackberry/Walnut Jewelry Box

Very cool Is the Hackberry as yellow as it appears in the picture? It could be mistaken for Osage Orange. Very nice contrast against the Walnut.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Thanks guys.
It's pretty darn close Dave. Here's a pic fresh out of the camera, just resized. I did some 'minor' adjustments on the first one with Gimp for the calendar thingie.

Good looking box! I made a couple of those for gifts when that article came out. You're choice of wood is great!

Re: Hackberry/Walnut Jewelry Box

You sure that's hackberry? I've sawn quite a bit of hackberry and everyone I've ever opened up has a green tint. The red streak bottom right hand corner and the long ambrosia pattern leads me to believe it's of the maple (Aceraceae) family. I could be wrong and have been before... just looking at eye candy makes it much more difficult than using my other senses like, feel, smell and taste. Nice jazz up with the flowers and the carved arrowhead neckless for the pic

Nice box

Nice work, Ken. That hackberry sure is pretty.

Lantana..is that something like a Sultana?

Yeah, I was going to suggest Flamed Box Elder too. Either way beautiful.

Re: Hackberry/Walnut Jewelry Box

Excellent!

I am tempted to add my voice to the chorus of "that doesn't look like the hackberry I have", but in my limited experience spalting can do some bizarre things. I had some white oak that looked like that once. No, I don't think you have WO; just tossing it out as an example of how spalting can change things. Anyway, very nice work!

Re: Hackberry/Walnut Jewelry Box

Morning,
Thanks again.
No Jeff, Gary and Andy, I ain't sure it's hackberry. That's what the old sawyer up the road I got it from said it is.
He's 80 something and been logging and sawing since he was a young boy so I give him credit. Now, around here trees are often called local names so who knows? I'm pretty sure it isn't a Maple species. It is lighter in weight and yellowish. This stock definitely has been visited by Ambrosia beetles tho, it has the same bore holes but the striping from the chemical reaction is more Red, some places are very Red.
Here are a few high res images, maybe they will help. I can't seem to capture the yellowish tint.

End grain:

Re: Hackberry/Walnut Jewelry Box

Only looking at pictures... my vote is for BoxElder / Aceraceae / Acer negundo L. Nice find... it's hard to come by around here.

Here's a link, see if this is what you have ---> http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-...ods/box-elder/

Yep, I think that's it Jeff. You were right on Gary, I had dismissed Elder since I've never heard of any around here. I need to go plunder in the sawmill's old lumber stacks.
Thanks

I would if I were you - Box Elder can be some real eye candy when you get a mix of heart and sapwood along with red streak and ambrosia beetle tracks.
