Talking

I finally get my chance to gloat! Picked this up from a nice guy in Burnsville. Never touched wood outside of the factory. $250!!!

I've been holding out for the last necessity for my shop! I'm glad I did. I was so excited I bought a little benchtop router table and Hitachi Router from the guy as well! LOL. Not quite gloat material since I paid $120 for the set but not too shabby! Saves me some of my valuable time that i would have used building a router table, so I can concentrate on using my new Domino which ships in a day or too! Woo hoo! Peter

Excellent grab, Peter! You even got the 3-knife model DW734, which should give you smoother cuts -- I love my DW733 and have run it and run it and run it -- unfortunately, I hit a hidden nail this afternoon and buggered up the knives -- I've got another set which I'll need to install before I do any project planing. I did it planing some of the rough cut cherry I've had air drying -- I'm making stickers for a big stack (about 300 BF) of cherry I just had cut and which is headed for a kiln up in Swannanoa early next week.

BTW -- YOU SUCK!

Rob

That's a pretty good gloat if I've ever seen one.
A You Suck is definitely deserved.
And $120 for a router table and router isn't bad either.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Haha! Gloating never felt so good! Hey I'm a noob so the first time is memorable right? Now that I've got most of my shop pieces in place I've already started thinking about the things that need to be upgraded first!
Is this an incurable problem? Shhh, don't tell the lady of the house!

Thanks Scott! Uh oh, now we have a new problem though. You guys are gonna hate me. I just realized I've never even used a planer before! I guess I'll be on here even more buggin' y'all with my silly questions. Sorry in advance.

Haha Mike. Don't worry, she doesn't even like to come down here. Too dirty and loud! Good reason not to finish the basement and a good excuse to not keep it too clean! Actually was a bit embarrassed to take a picture in my 'shop'. I get pretty green with envy with I see some of the nice work spaces around here. Oh well, it ain't much but it's mine. It sure beats livin' in an apartment with NO shop space.

good score Peter, YOU definitely SUCK!

about not ever having used a planer before, don't worry, all of us were in that situation once. Your next problem will be never having used a bigger planer before, or a bigger jointer, or bigger table saw.... And yes, it is incurable, there is no known cure for Woodguy Disease, because there is always something just a little bigger, just a little more powerful.... Heck, I am waiting for the original Woodguy to say he is building a new shop, to accomodate a 42" bandsaw.... just know it is going to have to happen. That 36 he got will only 'fix' his need for but so long!

I'd say a hearty You Suck!!! is in order for the planer.

Now, as far as the router and router table...no pics, didn't happen. Forum rules apply!

The learning curve on a planer is not too steep. Do you have a DC? The planer generates a whole lotta wood chips very quickly.

Chuck is right.... I have filled four 42 gallon contractor's clean-up bags with chips in quite a hurry.... which makes me wonder of the wisdom of getting a regular 'consumer/hobby' shop size cyclone when moving to a bigger shop, with multiple tools running at the same time?

If you don't have DC, I strongly recommend you get one, and the Harbor Freight 2 HP version is a good place to start.

I agree with all that say a DC is a MUST with these tools. HF is a very good way to go. The learning curve on a planer is easy, just make sure the infeed and out feed table are set correctly and keep downward pressure on the wood as you feed it in. I like to keep my infeed and outfeed tables tipped up frantionally at the ends to avoid snipe.

I concur with the dust collector recommendations. When I got my first planer (small Ridgid), I used a shop vac. Better than nothing, but a dedicated DC will work better.

Check Craigs List for local deals. In the past couple of weeks I recall seeing one or two listed in different NC cities.
