I finally finished a harvest table I have been working on for a while.
It is made from red oak and is 6' x 41" with out center leaf and 8' with center leaf. I finished it with rock hard table varnish and buffed out the finish. I was worried I had bitten off more than I could chew since it is such a large project and I am in a wheelchair. I am happy with the results since it is my first table.

That's one fine looking table! Got any closeups of the table legs? How are they attached?

Re: Finally Finished

Thanks. The legs are attached in the knock down fashion. Here is a picture of the underside. My shop is just setup lower than normal. For the larger pieces I need moved I just have my kids give me a hand when they need moving.

Re: Finally Finished

Very nice job, Alan. I particularly like the beading details you added to the legs and apron. I've used Behlen's Rock Hard Varnish before, too -- it is superb stuff and your table will remain that pretty for years and years because of it's durability. Nice work.

Re: Finally Finished

Awesome, that's a great looking table and you'll feel the pride of making it yourself everytime the family sits down to eat at it. What did you use for the center leaf opening slide mechanism? Wood or metal??

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Great job Alan. Really heirloom quality and you have a good eye for detail. I also think the finish turned out very nice.

Re: Finally Finished

Excellent work there Alan.

I too really like the beading detail on the apron and legs! How thick are the legs? It sure looks very, very sturdy and am quite sure that it will last and last...generation to generation!

Very nice!

Re: Finally Finished

I used wood expansion slides made from hard maple. The legs are 2 3/4" square. I thought the beading on the legs added alot to the looks of the legs without adding much work to the project. The finish took the most time. getting it level and then wet sanding and buffing out the finish with a couple grades of polishing compound. But the looks are worth every minute. Also as you said it is nice to sit down to a meal with family and friends at a table you built yourself.
