Finally got my class in - great class, great teacher, funny stories & no band-aids needed all day!

Fruit of my labor:

Roy's idea of a momento picture!

Re: Enjoyed a good day at The Woodwright's School

Great to hear you had such fun!

Is it me or doesn't it look like a rip cut back saw, but you are front cross cutting Roy?

Did he have any previews for upcoming classes?

Jim

Re: Enjoyed a good day at The Woodwright's School

no update yet on future classes. He said things were crazy with transition from Williamsburg down here, looking for new place, etc.. They just got funding for the next season on PBS so they'll be taping the new show and he is going out to the Marc Adams school in Indiana with the spindle lathefor a class in July. So he has a few other irons in the fire.

But he is excited about getting this up and going. I am sure its a big step.

Jim
you have good eyesite - it was indeed a back saw, but the little dovetail saw just seemed so small for the job!

Guess I better join your sawing class next so I can get it right!

Re: Enjoyed a good day at The Woodwright's School

class topics were consistent with what was reported on other classes. Roy wanted us to learn his method on all of the basic woodworking joints - dovetail joint for case construction, blind half dovetails to do the drawers, and the draw-bored mortise and tenon (2 tenons meeting in the corner) for joining legs. With that we have everything we need to get started (except for lacking all of the appropriate tools back home in my shop).

He pulled out an old tool chest and queried us as to its age and how we knew - wood, square screws, tools in it, etc. Went over all the tools inside it. later he got out the grinding wheel and someone ground a chisel they brought in. He also showed us timber frame construction examples out on the sidewalk. Used the treadle table saw a couple of times as well.

the benches were solid Hoffman and Hammer benches, used a plow plane, shoulder plane, block plane. couple different chisels. All around a good day. I had seen the stuff on Roy's show, but it is different actually getting in there and doing it - my first time with dovetails.

Roy usually cuts himself just looking at a sharp tool.
