Re: Finally Made Some Progress On End Tables

Hmmm... This is all that I have. We donated them to our church for a silent auction. This looks like right after the first coat of BLO as I think I put a satin waterbased lacquer on them.

Re: End Tables: UPDATE

Well I am getting a little closer, slowly but surely. Still have some adjustments on the drawers to make, decide what I am going to do with the open place in the bottom. Probably two doors on each. Thanks to walnutjerry for the use of his band saw yesterday.

Thanks for looking. Hopefully a lot more progress tomorrow

Re: End Tables: UPDATE

Looking good Tracy! This is always the hardest part, the stage where you're almost done and just need to finesse a few things to get it right. It's gonna be great. Not even sure you need doors there, I think it looks fine the way it is. Can't hurt though.

Re: End Tables: Now They Shine

Thanks Bas, Your opinion is always well received. I don't want doors, but the wife does. What do you do? Got the first coat of BLO and poly on them tonight. Walnutjerry told me of a mixture of three that is really looking good so far. Darkening the wood just enough to suit me. Blo, Mineral Spirits, and Poly. Mixed in thirds. It is really bringing out the Ash more than I thought it would. Ok, maybe I been smellin too many chemicals tonight?

That's my favorite finish. In fact, it's my only finish that I really feel comfortable with. I've used stains in the past, but for just bringing out the wood and giving it some protection, can't beat BLO/ Poly. Plus, it's cheap too

One suggestion - when you're done, be prepared to wait a while before you put it in the bedroom. I made a little drill press cabinet several months ago and it _still_ has an oil smell. That's not too big a deal for a workhop, but your wife might object. Putting it outside (with the drawer outside the case) will help dramatically.

The end tables look great, Tracy!
Hmmm, may be time to consider a new member name. Newtowood may no longer be accurate

Re: End Tables: Now They Shine

Now that I got a little finish on them I thought I would post a few pictures of the almost finished product. The drawer pulls are from the picnic. Thanks to whoever brought them. I may put a magazine, newspaper rack on one side of each. I haven't decided yet. Think I am going to leave the doors off of the bottom for now.

Re: End Tables: Now They Shine

Great work Tracy, you did a nice job putting the prettiest figure on the drawers. Did you work off some plans or is this designed from scratch? Either way, would you mind sharing some of the measurements? I may want to build something similar myself one day. I really dig the curved apron, the trim and frame panel construction.

Glad you liked the drawer pulls, I had way too many of them, so I'm glad to see them put to good use!

Re: End Tables: Now They Shine

I worked from plans I bought off of the net. There was supposed to be a curve in the divider between the drawer and the open space but I did not like it. Call me weird, just one of those eye things. Every time I looked at it in the picture the eye would go straight to that section.

Wow Tracey!!! Fine looking tables!!! (Personally, I like them w/o the doors!)

What kind of material did you use for the panels in the sides?

That finish really does justice to that fine looking wood!

Well Done!

That is Ash Plywood from the hardwood store of NC. Lighter than I wanted it to be but it may have to do. I may do something to those panels later.

Bas, Reggie, Roger, Wayne, and Danny, Thank you for the kind replies. I have a long way to go to get as good as a lot of the pros on this site.
