Drill press table (pics) Fence pics added!!!!!!!!!

Found sometime in the shop this evening and started build a long needed drill press table. It is about 17" x 27" x 1.25" thick. It is made up from 2 pieces of melamine I had lying around the back shed, and my favorite wormy maple for the edging. The hole in the bottom of the insert opening is to stick a dowel up from the bottom to remove the insert. I thought it woud look cool to route the chamfer right through the "t" track Next up is a fence for it.

How are you attaching it to the regular drillpress table??

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

I want to be able to remove it easily. I was thinking of mounting a couple of threaded inserts to the bottom and using a couple of knobs to tighten it down

Re: Drill press table (pics)

That looks great. How did you do that chamfer on the end? Did you file it down to match the routed chamfer?

Great looking table, Tom. I'm going to need to build a new one for my drillpress at some point. I look forward to seeing you fence design.

I routed right through it. Aluminum routes very easily.

Re: Drill press table (pics)

Great job on the drillpress table Tom! Being a newbie , I would think the aluminum would dull the router bit more than the wood. Is this true? Or do you just have so many bits you don't care?
Nice work,

I am sure it is a little harder on the bit, but they are machining metal with carbide in industry. So why not? When I worked for DeWalt repair I worked on several routers that where used for aluminum all the time. I just blew out the router real good when I was finished. I cut the t-track with my mitersaw too, with no problem.

Re: Drill press table (pics)

Tom,

Very cool drill press table. That's one of those tool additions I still need to make. Let us know how you decide to attach it to the drillpress... I'll take any ideas I can get. (I always need a bit of inspiration.)

Ray

Re: Drill press table (pics)

Nice looking table, and the chamfering is a nice touch. Bringing the track all the way out to the front of the table is a great idea. Too often you see commerical tables that only have short track sections for the fence. With a full track, you can use it for the fence and for mounting hold-downs.

Re: Drill press table (pics)

Tom, looks great!

A suggestion- when you mount the table, align it so drill bits align with the insert off center, on a diagonal, closer towards one corner of the insert. That way when the insert hole becomes buggered to the point you would normally replace the insert, you can just rotate it instead of making a new one. Actually, by further adjusting the table you can get more than 4 positions. Or better yet, by using a round insert you have MANY positions.

Re: Drill press table (pics)

I though about using a round insert, but was to lazy to make up a bunch of inserts. The square are much faster to make. Good idea on making it off center, thanks.
