Brian, Greg, and Robert......
Cut that "next victim" down this morning. Not sure but it looks like red oak; just doesn't have that usual smell of red oak.

As I was cutting into it, a literal waterfall came out of the cut. Looking at the wedge I cut out to direct the fall, you'd swear I cut a watermelon tree.

Robert...where we thought there might be some burl? Didn't happen. Totally eaten up and the culprits were rather LARGE at that.

From that point back down the trunk about 7 ft. or so, the heartwood was pretty much coffee ground consistency. Looked solid but when I stuck the chainsaw in it, it came out like wet coffee grounds. Above where we thought the burl might be, the wood is solid with a little rot on the very outer edge near where that branch broke out.

Now I hadn't thought about that. You just might be right. It's pretty wet right now and red as red can be in the center. Come to think of it, the bark does look a bit like a cherry tree.

Cherry bark is flaky and doesn't have a distinct X pattern, in bigger cherry the bark looks like this.

Good bit of it on the ground. Wet as all heck too; almost to the point of dripping so it will need some drying time I'd imagine. Come get it or see if you can set up a PE run. Gotcha6 is coming over on Thurs. to get some goodies.

Ok now you got me all confused... Need a few more hints... did your wife accuse you of hanging out with another woman while you were away playing in the woods? Green cherry has a very faint smell of woman's perfume and the dust tastes kinda sweet. Cherry is not something a guy would smell like less he's been hanging out with another woman or cherry trees It's not at all like the smell of red oak which smells like puke. Is the wood open or closed grain? If it's closed grain I would be leaning twords red elm, commonly also called slippery elm because it's very wet. Elm really has no smell when cut and it's heart is quite red.
IMHO it's a much better wood than cherry for furniture making - cherry is rather soft on the other hand elm is hard and has better WW characteristics like it don't burn so easy while machining.

Jeff... you may have something here. The bark pattern is very similar and like you say the wet-ness or slipperiness of it does tend to go that way. Give me a leaf and I can tell for sure, but bark identification is really tough.
So when are you gonna write that book
