As an aside to my post about the baby crib, I assembled it yesterday. The plans came with a hardware kit containing a cross dowel system to connect the end sections to the foot board and head board. It was a good thing my soon to be grandchild wasn't around as I totally lost all my religion. These cross dowels are the most devious things I've run across in a long time. Any one else had any experience with the THE EVIL SPAWN?

Yes!! We have a custom built treated lumber screen door for a screen shelter we had built last fall ($150!!). It's put together with dowells. Right now it's laying in pieces in the back yard. It was very rarely used. It simply fell apart on it's own. Some of the dowells are broken off - how does that happen to a door that's never used? I am not a fan of dowells. There is a 2nd door which is sagging badly but the door frame is keeping it from drooping any further.
I'll have to try to drill them out and maybe try some kind of plates to hold the corners together.

I'm a little confused. Are you referring to metal cross dowels? Are they the round metal rods that have a tapped hole into the side for a machine screw?

If so, what is the problem you are having? These are used on lots of KD easy-to-assemble furniture and are pretty simple things.

HOWARD, Yes thats it. I couldn't get them to line up without a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Maybe it was the application wasn't right for them. Or maybe it was just me.

If the screwdriver slot in the barrel won't get it lined up for you, try a parts retrieval 'magnet on a stick'. Good luck. Joe

Yeah, if the parts don't go together easily, I'd say you have some other problem at work like mis-drilled parts.

Re: Cross Dowels-Spawn of the Devil

I used them to attached the end aprons to my new WW bench- worked great.

You need to be careful drilling the holes for them. If they are off horizontally the screw won't line up- in that case enlarge the bolt hole in the wood (like I did to allow for cross grain movement). If off vertically, hole too shallow, you need to drill it deeper, hole too deep, you'll need a magnet to pull it up until you have the bolt started. It is just a matter of accuracy positioning and drilling the dowel and bolt holes. See Monty's bench thread for how he aligned the cross dowels on his WW bench.

I believe your Title is pretty accurate - spawn of the devil. I played games with magnets and sticks getting my first attempts to fit.
