I discussed a reclining Morris chair project I had completed with a couple of members in the past and promised to send pictures. I have forgotten who the individuals were so I will post for all to see. The chair is constructed of solid hard maple. Legs are 2 1/4" square and the back splats are steam bent. I finished it with acrylic urathene automotive clear coat. The back and seat cushions were rich saddle tan but have since faded to this sand color. The plans I used were from FW, #101 - Aug '93 and modified to suit me. This was a fun project to build with complex joinery and lots of it. Not too much wiggle room on this project. I was able to put all the tools in the shop to good use. I enjoyed building it more than I did the Maloof style sculpted rocker as most of it was done by hand and shape as you go. The entire time I was building the rocker, I kept looking at all the machinery not being used while mostly using files, rasps, spoke shaves, scrapers and sand paper. I don't think I was ever as glad to finish a project.

Beautiful work, Dino. I was actually reviewing a plan for a chair similar to this last night and am thinking of taking it on next spring.

It is an attractive chair. I am thinking of building one out of cherry with 1" square side rails to match my bedroom furniture. I was not going to steam bend and considered runnig the back rails vertically to curve them.

Very Nice!!!!

Excellent job on the bent arm rests and through tenons! While I prefer the darker, fumed white oak look, your selection of wood and finish appears to fit perfectly with the room and decor in the pic.

That is one of many items on my always growing "to build someday" list

I haven't built a Maloof style rocker, but was thinking about those issues you mentioned!!

Nice work Dino. I built one a few years ago and it was a very satisfing project. I realy like the maple, gives it a different look than the usual dark oak.

Looks very good!
How's that "acrylic urathene automotive clear coat" holding up?
Is the chair exposed to the elements?

Looks great, Dino!
Lots of joinery going on there and it exudes sturdiness

Beautiful Dino, I've always liked the looks of the Morris chair, and I think it looks great in maple. I do have one question though, how comfortable is it to sit in, because I have pondered making one myself.

Thank you,
Jimmy

I actually built this chair as a house warming gift for my business partner. He used quite a lot of maple building his home; cabinets, casings and flooring throughout. I had never seen a maple Morris chair but thought it would be just the ticket for him; and it was. The Chair is very comfortable (down stuffed cushions) and would be even more so if I had built the ottaman to match it. I like the chair so much that I'm thinking about building another. Might use the quarter sawn Sycamore cut by Jeff and dried by Scott Smith. I think it would make a real beauty with a clear finish. The automotive clear coat that I used has remained water clear and is impervious to just about anything.

Hey Dino,

Great job on the Morris chair and I think the maple choice was super. I have the same Plans from FWW and have also snagged a supply of beautiful QSWO and two planks are also curly QS (plan to use these for the arms. Thanks for posting the pics...just the motivation I needed to get my a__ in gear.
