Hi Everyone,
Haven't been on the site a lot over the summer. Between work, gardening, and just trying to stay out of the heat and humidity, I haven't had a lot of time for much of anything. I have been working on a slab of Ambrosia Maple that I sliced off a stump last winter. After letting it dry over the winter and spring, I've been tinkering with it off and on and this is where I am now with it. It's currently sitting on a makeshift base while I fiddle around with what will be the final base for it. It's been somewhat sanded and had several applications of BLO and lemon oil. I need to find someone with a machine sander or planer that can handle this monster. At present, it's approx. 3-4" thick X 34" wide X 48" long. Spent many hours and several sanding belts getting it to this stage. Still needs to be leveled and finish sanded but that's for the coming winter months.

Oh, the dog is Tucker, our husky/sharpei mix, AKA "Moose."

I really like log cookies - one of these days I might try my hand at some. I'm sure when I do I'll be tapping on you so I can suck some of that experience out from between your ears. You did that cookie proud, looks great to me

Re: Coffe Table project

Thanks for all the good words there guys. It's been a long process from initial cutting to where it is now for sure. It started out at somewhere north of 200 lbs. and now it's down to where I can actually pick it up with lots of effort and move it around.

Very beautiful piece. You might want to look into buying a fesstool sanding system. I have an ETS 150/3 which is a fine finish sander. and their rotex 150 does a great job also. Their sandpaper goes all the way to 6000 grit.

I've used lemon oil for many years mainly because I like the way it penetrates the wood and brings out the grain patterns. It isn't a permanent finish for sure as it evaps. relatively quick. It doesn't build up like BLO or other polys or lacquers, and it helps to slow down the drying of the wood preventing a lot of the cracking and checking that would happen otherwise.

Once I've done all the finish sanding and leveling, I plan on putting a bar-top type of clear coat. Got some experimenting to do first though as I've never used that before but I've seen some awesome results of other folk's efforts.

Sounds good but a little too pricey for me right now. Maybe some day.
