My daughter is getting married in September and asked if I would build her a box for the guests to place cards in at the reception. I wanted to make it out of something special so I looked around the shop and found a piece of walnut that my daddy had always said he wanted to make something out of. I figured this was a special enough project to use his walnut for. I didn't want to waste it so I cut out a piece about 7" wide and layed out a line all the way around it and started ripping

It took about 1 1/2 hours of not too steady work. Not really hard and it was gratifying to see the board open up and not waste a lot of material in the saw kerf. The resulting pieces really made it worth the effort

I ran them through the lunch box planer and then taped them together to be able to gang cut the dovetails

Then it was off to the bench again to layout and cut the tails and then mark the pins. Those who have taken the class at The Woodwright's School may recognize this technique. It was new to me before going there and now it seems like second nature. It works for me.

I was having trouble with my camera and my computer talking to each other so there will be some skips in the progress pics but will take more tomorrow and continue as I go along from here. There are a few more pictures in my gallery.

Thanks for looking.

James

Well I didn't take any more progress pics, But here is what that walnut turned into.

The 5 Walnut pens are the gifts for the groomsmen ant the pianist. The Cherry Burl is for the guest registry. It was requested by my daughter. The box is for gift cards if there are any. I am still working on a stool she wanted because her fiancé is 6'-6" and she stands 5'-6".

Thanks for looking and wish me luck in getting through the wedding. She is my only baby.

James

I am sure hand-ripping that walnut was quite a workout! I wouldn't have had the patience! Great work so far, can't wait to see the rest!

Re: Box WIP

Nice, James!
And it's refreshing to note that one doesn't need a 24" bandsaw to rip the board

Re: Box WIP...UPDATE

Beautiful work, Jim. Bet that ol' Disston(?) made a lot less noise than a bandsaw. I have one similar, but It develops this grunting/wheezing sound about half way through a board and I have to shut it off and let it set a bit before I start it up again. The wider the board, the quicker the noise starts.

Go

For real: It looks like you have it tuned up pretty good looking at the cut!

Re: Box WIP...UPDATE

Thanks for the comments.

Mark, I noticed the same thing with this saw. It seems to have a mind of it's own too. The more experience I try to give it, the more it makes those weird sounds.
