I need a little help with jointing 8 ~36"x8" boards. My jointer is a 6" model and it can't handle the 8" width I have. I am in the Apex area and I can bring the boards by most any time -other- than 9-5, Mon-Fri.

Jim, I believe you need to plane your boards. I hope I'm right here. If that is the case, you can bring them to the shop and we can plane them together.
Send me a Pm, BTW I'm about 45-60 minutes from you.
Maybe someone closer will speak up. if not I'm here.

Jim,

I am in Rougemont, if you don't find anyone closer or if you don't mid the drive, I can plane/join the boards.

Cheers,
Bernhard

I think a jointer is for trueing up the edges of the board. I know its possible to joint the face of the board, but planing the board should work well for you.

You have to joint one of the wide faces also before planing them or the planer will just follow any irregularity, twist, warp or whatever. See the link below for an overview on the process if that would help.

Jim, I have a 16" jointer which you are welcome to use. I live about 15 minutes from Apex in New Hill.

I'll send you a PM with my cell phone number.

16" Dang!
I'd go there just to see this aircraft carrier sized jointer.

BUT

you could do this with your tiny 6" jointer. Rip the boards in half. Run them on your tiny 6" jointer then glue them back together. That's the way I do it.

Or if you have a planer, just build yourself a jointing sled... I was in the same situation last week (6" jointer, 8" wide boards) and built one in about 10 minutes.

Jim,

I've got an 8 inch DJ20 jointer. I live in Cary just off of Lake Pine. You're welcome to use it, just sent me a PM if interested.

I forgot about making a planer sled. I will research that one. But I think I will take Scott up on his offer this time. I too would like to see a 16" planer in action.

Without a sled, the planer will only be making my stock parallel, not flat. I am making a blanket chest for my daughter from DJ Marks plans. I am using Goncalo Alves for the main box and Wenge for the base and trim. I have not found the stock I will use for the top yet. Looking for something highly figured that I can resaw to bookmatch. Some inspiration came from here. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/736

Jim, sometime maybe I can show you how to joint a board that is wider than your jointer. This works if your jointer has a rabbeting ledge- most do. You have to make sure knives are set out as far as the projected side of the ledge. Make a simple fixed sled of 1/4 MDF to attach to infeed table that matches rabbeting ledge. Remove gaurd, lower infeed table by 1/4" and face joint away. This will leave and area that isn't face jointed. Take another piece of 1/4 MDF and use as a sled under face jointed area and send whole thing through planer, with unjointed face up. After second face is parrallel, turn board over and remove sled. Send this side through planer. You can do boards up to 1 1/2 the width of your jointer with this method.

Many thanks to Scott today for help with the big jointer. We got my boards flattened on the USS Grizzley CVN-016. I also got a show at the Bonsal steam locomotive event that was in his front yard.
