Super glue em!

During the cold dry months of winter, I get those nasty little cracks in the ends of my fingers. They are painful! The best treatment that I have found for them is to clean affected area well, dry, and then put a drop of super glue over crack. Be sure to let super glue dry completely before handling anything. Also, if you suffer from cold feet during winter, here are a couple of tips. The US Army spent millons on research on keeping soilders feet warm, and came to the same results that I have used for years. Most cold feet are caused by actually being wet. (My feet don't perspire, they SWEAT!) First when riding in the car, don't have heat directed down on your feet. Second, before puting socks and shoes on in the morning, spray your feet, especially the toes, with anti-perspirant deoderant. Truely amazing results.

Re: Super glue em!

CA glue is some amazing stuff.I sliced my palm open on a freshly sharpened skew chisel (about a inch and half long to the muscle) DAMHIDT in the end of Nov. Not wanting to miss out on going to get dinner at Cracker Barrel (with the folks paying), I decided that I could use some thick CA to hold it together so it would quit bleeding all over the dang place. That worked rather well, and the next day I was complimented by Dr. Alan Mask (of TV fame) for the quick thinking, but he also gave me grief for not coming in right away to get the five stitches I needed.....the man has obviously not been to Cracker Barrel

Re: Super glue em!

You can buy a medical grade of it now. LOML is finnicky about things, and didn't like me using it for what you are using it and bought some. Dang stuff is expensive.

My other "quick" band aid is black electrical tape.

Re: Super glue em!

I once read that the origin of super glue was the field medical needs of Army Medics in Viet Nam to suture wounds fast.

Re: Super glue em!

I have suffered for years in the winter with the cracks that were described. Never having found a satisfactory solution, the idea of super glue sounds like something to try. I get free medical advice from my son who is an emergency physician, so I sent him an email. He replied:

It is unlikely you will suffer further by using super glue. The medical grade “dermabond” is about 400 dollars (your cost). It probably won’t help much as far as healing but it will keep it closed with an artificial scab. The type of crack you have in your finger is not like a cut so the healing afforded by the glue won’t apply….. but I think you should try it so we will know what to do when we get old!

(I hope you get more than that little tiny tube for $400.)

Re: Super glue em!

The medical grade CA is made here in the great city of Raleigh, by a company recently purchased by Johnson & Johnson. They were working on a product for skin cracks and canker sores a bit ago, but that was before the buyout. My friend that worked there has left, but he assured me that the biggest difference between standard CA and the "medical" stuff was in the process of making it, as medical has to meet FDA standards of cleanliness and sanitation. Hockey players have been using CA for years to close cuts; I think boxing trainers have as well. So keep on using it if you like, but with the standard caveat: AT YOUR OWN RISK. I too have used standard CA without issues. HTH.
