I had this idea for a while. I told my wife last night and she said enthusiastically "you should do it."

We have collectively a great deal of construction and carpentry skills on this site. There are a great number of service men coming back from their tours of duty with permanent disabilities. Due to these disabilities their living arrangements are inadequate.

My idea is for us to contact Fort Bragg, (or somewhere else in NC) and offer our labor to help renovate these service men's homes. It may be adding ramps for wheel chairs, widening doorways, adding support rods to baths and showers, etc.

I know there are a lot of details to be worked out to see if this idea will work, but I thought the first step is to see if there is interest here. I believe there are organizations that do this. Since we are primarily an NC group my idea is that we do it in our own backyard.

What do you all think?

Doug,

That sounds like a great idea. You could do that for veterans or others who have recently become disabled. I'm not sure where the funding would come from, but it does sound like a great idea. Count me in.

Trent:

Thanks for the response. Researching what I thought I had heard of led me to "Homes for Our Troops." They have a website. Most of it is geared to raising funds, however I called them and spoke to a very pleasent woman named Catherine. They work in a manner similar to Habitat for Humanity. They are presently finishing a project in Waxhaw. They are hoping to finalize a project for this Spring in Fayetteville (3 houses). We would not have to provide funds. We could sign up as a group and help in the construction. They do a marathon three day "Barn-raising" in which they frame, side and roof the house. We could provide labor, "skill" and our tools.

I have not committed anything. I was just trying to learn what options we have IF there is interest here. As much as I like hanking someone for their service, I would rather use actions to show my gratitude. After all some of these men and women have made tremendous sacrifices for us.

I have a few commitments this spring but if I am free count me in. I also have a pick-up truck which we can use to move people and materials.

Hey Doug - Great idea! Thanks for taking the initiative on this. My Spring is pretty busy but depending on the dates, I'm in if at all possible.

Not sure how much, what was that you called it? "skill"?? I can offer but I've got labor and tools !

Thanks to those who have responded so far. Chris, lets give a few days andsee what the response is. Then we can figure out the best way to implement the idea. I like your options. Once we learn the details of how and when we can help each organization, we can then choose the one(s) that best fit our capabilities.

Doug,

Yes, I actually saw that show on tv at work the other night for a little while, but I didn't know they did it in our area. I guess once the organization is decided upon, then we should look at the dates/experience levels/etc. I'm currently working 6 days per week, sometimes 7. So I probably couldn't do 3 days in a row, but maybe two.

Doug, I like the idea a lot. I am a big fan of the Habitat for Humanity programs and have built several houses with them. I often have thought that it would be a good thing to get a group of North Carolina Woodworker'ers together to build a HfH house. I like your idea lot, there is a real need for it, and it is a great way to say thank-you to those who have sacrificed so much for this worlds freedom.
Count me in with bells on

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.
