Moderator Hello all,
My wife and I have the chance at a weekend up in the mountains in October (with out our daughter). To save money and try something new (for her) we want to making it a camping trip. The problem is we have no camping gear. We are asking all of our friends about borrowing some camping gear: Tent, 2@ sleeping bags, gas stove, lanterns, etc (stuff I have not thought of). We are not back packing, just driving to the campsite. I know beggars can't be choosy, but I am hoping to find a large enough tent so I can at least stand up in the middle (me 5'10").
Any and all help in this would be great.
P.S. When I borrow anything I return it in the same or better condition then when I got it and if not I make it right. (big believer in the golden rule here) | | Views: 404 |

We have a nice Aero inflatable mattress we will be bringing, and I have my beautiful wife to cuddle up with to stay warm. |

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Since you are car-camping, may I suggest entering the Pisgah Forest in Brevard and camping near "The Pink Beds" or "The Cradle of Forestry". Both are at a high enough elevation that you should have some great views, small trails to walk and public facilities - but not so close to the road as to be bothered. Each of these are well marked areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway access road from Brevard. There are many waterfalls and fun places to stop - including "Sliding Rock". Contrary what thoughts the name might suggest, it's a where you slide on the shale bed of a mountain brook and plunge into the water below (let the wife or kids go first - the water is very,,,,cool).
Another excellent trip is to the North, on the New River. I've used an outfitter named Zaloos Canoes, which provides dropoff, canoes, gear, and pickup. New River Outfitters, or NRO, is another good one. They have a deal with a nearby camping area on the river where you can spend the night and then canoe to the pickup point the next day. Good family event.
-Have a great time

Isn't there also a area around there called "Bust a*s falls". I have been thinking about the canoe thing but have not asked my wife yet. |

We got it a couple of years ago and have only used it a few times since so it is in pretty good shape. It is freestanding and sets up pretty easily. It has a floor but it is pretty thin. I used to have a tarp to go under it but I'll have to look for that. I think it is supposed to sleep 6-8 but that would have to be 8 midgets (no offense to midgets). Last time we used it we had an inflatable mattress for me and my wife and foam mattresses for the kids so it ought to be plenty big for your family (unless you are the Brady Bunch).
We've been meaning to go on an overnight camping trip (locally) with our kids so we might want to use it once before you go on your trip. I'll check with the boss and see when she wants to go........if she wants to go. She doesn't really like "roughing it" anymore especially if it is cold but we both know the kids would love to go again (provided we bring stuff for s'mores). |

I've also got a tent that you can borrow. It's not free standing (relies on being staked down), but I've got the ultimate stakes to make that less of a hastle...8-10" landscaping spikes. It's a 3 room model, I'm 6' and I can almost stand up in it. It could easily hold 3 full size air mattresses. It's only been camped in once...one of the cooler things that we registered for at Target
I've also got a propane lantern, 2 burner stove, extra sets of pots and pans, sleeping bags, whatever. It's all my dedicated camping stuff and it's all set aside in rubbermaid containers.
Unfortunately, with me working all week and my wife working most weekends, we've not been able to go camping at all this season.
Just let me know and I can drop it off at the store. It give me an excuse to stop by and browse anyway
