I just got this message about an upcoming meeting of our local WW club here in Hickory. Thought I'd pass it along...

POPULAR RECORDING STAR TO
ADDRESS WOODCRAFTERS

John Boulding, widely known entertainer, recording star, and maker of musical instruments, will speak to the Western Piedmont Woodcrafters at their combined holiday meeting on Saturday December 3. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the Klingspor Woodworking Shop located between Route 70 and Tate Boulevard at 856 21st Street Drive in Hickory.

In addition to his performance schedule with the Shady Grove Band, Mr. Boulding is a skilled luthier who has made banjos, guitars, and other stringed instruments. His talk to the Woodcrafters will concentrate on the design and construction of these instruments. He will also talk about the types of wood and tools used to fashion special parts.

The Shady Grove Band has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe presenting their own variety of “new-timey” bluegrass sound. They have appeared on CBS and NBC television and have recorded six CDs.

Woodcrafters President Art Kreidel invites anyone with an interest in woodwork-ing to attend the meeting. Both beginners and skilled woodworkers are welcome. The Woodcrafters club meets once a month to hear speakers and to see demonstrations of woodworking equipment, projects, and techniques.

More information can be obtained by calling 828 324 9851.
I googled him and came up with this little bio: John Boulding

Re: Any luthiers out there...?

I'm not a luthier, but I've played since I was a kid, and I've live tech'd for many years (which means I set it up really nice, tune it and polish it before a show starts, then during the whole show I try to keep it from being bashed to death by the guy playing it onstage).

I've never heard of that guy or his bands, but not surprising as looks to be a bluegrass guy. I don't deal with acoustic guitars at all, they aren't loud enough.

Re: Any luthiers out there...?

That's awesome. IMO a luthier is one of the finest marks of a craftsman. I personally love Bluegrass music and dream of the day when I can make my own Mandolin, or Banjo. That sounds like a great presentation, too bad it is too far for me to attend. Please post a full synapsis of the presentation upon it's completion. Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Heard from a client..."If I had your tools and experience...I could do it myself"
