Pig Pickin'
Fall gathering in Asheville
Saturday October 11th 2008.

I'll have the gate open by 8:am And lock it by 10pm.
You don't have to come that early or stay that late!
Come together and enjoy some time with your fellow woodworkers.

The food ought to be ready at 1pm.

WNCWA will have their meeting- check their site for time.

We will have some demonstrations and participation activities.
Nothing too strenuous. This is supposed to be FUN.
Hopefully you may learn something along the way.

Directions to the facility are -
I-26 to exit 37 - Long Shoals Road/NC 146.
Turn WEST onto Long Shoals cross the river. (its maybe 100 yards from the interstate).
Drive 1 mile and turn right onto Clayton Road (the first road to the right).
The site is one mile down Clayton Road.
Turn right from Clayton Road into the drive. It will be marked.
I'll send out more information if needed. Please drop a note if I can help you with maps, information, accomodations, or anything else.

I-26 Exit 37 is 3 miles from the Asheville Airport exit, and 6 miles from I-40. Take I-40 to I-26 east.

There is most anything available in the area one might need.
The sites of interest are as varied as your interests.

In the area are some interesting places to visit
- Blue Ridge Parkway
Click here: Virtual Blue Ridge Parkway Guide
- NC Folk Art Center
Click here: Blue Ridge - Folk Art Center
- NC Arboretum
Click here: The North Carolina Arboretum
- WNC Nature Center ( a small zoo of native animals)
Click here: Western North Carolina Nature Center, Red Wolf Breeding Program, Animals in Natural Habitats
- Biltmore House and Gardens
Click here: Visit Biltmore - Biltmore House

Any specific questions or requests, please ask and I'll be happy to see how we can help!
If we can't find it we'll find out who can.

Motels-
Quality Inn 828-684-6688 Long Shoals Road at I-26 - closest one.
(fairly nice place from the times I 've been to calls there.)

Airport Road and I-26 One exit South (3 miles)
Comfort Inn - 828-687-9199
Holiday Inn - 828-684-1213
EconoLodge- 828-684-1200

There are MANY options in the area. These are just the closest.
Also if you're local and would like to help....
I like the team concept!!
Please check the staff announcement forum and take the poll of how many will be coming. We're getting ready and looking forward to meeting as many as possible!
Many have said they're coming PLEASE DO- but take the poll to help us out...

Question Re: fall gathering in the mountains....

My daughter and I are going up for the day on Saturday and coming back that night. Is there anyone from Charlotte that would like to carpool up with us and split cost of gas?

Re: fall gathering in the mountains....

Hey Captn - I figured I would tell you as soon as I found out myself - I won't be able to make it to the "fall gathering in the mountains...." So please scratch myself and those three that I was planning on bringing. I'm sorry but I had to bump this event for a family reason. I'm sorry I was really looking forward to it too but family always comes first.

Thanks

Re: fall gathering in the mountains....

I plan to make it out there ... and if I do I'll bring some of the professionally printed generic North Carolina Woodworker cards with me so people can take a handful. I ordered 2500 ... so please take a bundle!

Re: fall gathering in the mountains....

Is there a name and address of the facility where it's located? I know you gave directions, but I was aiming for something I might be able to plug into the GPS.

Jeremy, try plugging in 100 Clayton Road, Asheville, NC 28704. Plug that address into Google Maps and then switch the view to satellite and you'll see that you are very close to the entrance just to the left of the tag letter. A gravel driveway goes into the site past a small home and you enter the large cleared area along the French Broad River -- the red roofed building next to the river is a building where the food will be served. Note the beautiful rapids in the river... nice place!

Brought my youngest son, Stephen, his wife Crystal and their 8 week old baby, Maddyn, to the fall gathering today. I'll post the pics tomorrow. Had a great time, good company, won a Workmate as a door prize, had some good pig, bought some clamps. Thanks for all the work you did, Andy. Sorry more folks didn't come. I'm afraid Andy was stuck with a larger share of the bill than he should have been.

There was a lot of leftover food. Andy and his wife put a lot of work into this.

Re: fall gathering in the mountains....

It was indeed a great gathering, but we should have had lots more people there. Kudos to Captain Andy and his hard working wife Robin for a spendid Barbeque with all the trimmings. Our WNCWA group (9 or 10 members with many wives and geusts were there) brought side dishes to supplement the great food that ANdy and RObin had. No one went away hungry, that's for sure! All told, there was about 40-50 people overall. Special kudos to Chuck and Char Seeheutter who made the picnic all the way from Pananma City, FL; NCScroller and Peteb301 and their wives from the Triangle; and still others from Salisbury, Concord and Charlotte.

Me like a total dummy remembered most everything but my camera, but several others took pictures. I am creating a special Photo Gallery for the Fall 2008 Gathering to upload your pics.

Re: fall gathering in the mountains....

Trust me when I say I planned on being there in every possible way ... from picking things up from people and arranging rides ... but Thursday I fell sick with extremely high body temperatures and unforunately just couldn't get my body to cooperate enough to make the trip. Two full days in bed and today was the first hope of getting out ... but still questionable at best.

One thing that irritates me more than none other is when people say they are going to do something and then don't do it ... especially when it impacts someone else plans, expectations, or finances ... and here I go doing it (though not voluntarily ... trust me BarBQ sounds better than BarfBQ)

Andy - I would be happy to cover my share. I would have eaten a lot and probably talked your ear off, so take that into consideration. Drop me your email address and I'll PayPal you the money (and you don't have the option to say "no")
