I have been asked to build a curio cabinet in a custom size and it needs to have some tempered glass in it. I would like to know if anyone knows of a source in the Charlotte - Hickory area (or reasonably close to there) where I could get custom sized tempered glass. I have checked on the internet and found places that want an unreasonable amount of money for it, or they want a lot to ship it if the glass is reasonable. I wouldn't mind driving to save on high dollar shipping costs. I figure as many fine woodworkers that we have here someone would have used that in a project along the way.

I did a commission piece two years ago that required tempered glass. I got it from a local glass and mirror company. It had to be special ordered and wasn't too awful pricey. If I recall, about a 24" x 16" piece was $20-$25. But then memory fails at my age. I did have to change the design a little. Once tempered, you cannot drill a hole or cut the stuff. Make sure all the holes (pull knobs, etc) you want are in it when ordered.

I used two pieces for my last project, roughly 16W x 48L x 1/8 thk...it was 82 dollars (41 dollars each).

I would think any glass shop would have tempered glass. Maybe try therealyellowpages.com??

I ordered some tempered glass in January and the glass company said that soon rules would be passed to require the tempered glass logo on all pieces (I think for liability reasons). Has anyone else heard this story? I am dreading the day that I have to made a 1"long rabbit on one side of the doors to hide the logo .

I have friends that own a glass company in Matthews. I will get the information and post it here.

Here it is:

The owners are Brian and Lisa Hale.

Thanks,

Any good glass shop can order it for you.Unless it's a standard size that would be a replacement for a door or such it's going to be special order, usually there's a minimum size and any thing under that size is'nt viable thinking around 2 sg ft maybe if memory serves me. All the tempered glass I have seen in the past had a logo on it already and I think thats standard practice, does'nt stick out at you but is there usually in a corner of the glass if you look for it.

Thanks for the tips, I will make contacts as soon as I can. My concern has been with some glass shops trying to make a full week's living on one customer. I have had glass quoted to me ranging from reasonable to $180 for a small 16 x 24" square. I know that isn't reasonable, price varies as much in the glass market as it does with gasoline these days (and it's all kinda high). Any other suggestions are always welcome!!!

Any local glass company around here can get tempered glass for me for a seemingly reasonable price. There may be a minimum but I never had to worry about it.

They can get any size, thickness, edge finish, etc. Pick what you want and pay your money. The last one I did was a round replacement glass top for an outdoor table. I took them the big aluminum ring (let them figure out the size) and also told them to put a 2" hole in the middle of it. Cost was about $100 out the door if I remember correctly. Took about 2 weeks to get it.
