Ceramic wool. a.k.a. Welding Blanket can be found at most welding supply shops or most anywhere welding supplies are sold.

Re: small piece of ceramic wool wanted

Most fireplace and wood stove shops have ceramic firestop which is used around wall penetrations, etc.

Charlie Hanft can send you some from http://www.hearthandpatio.com/

Thanks!

The welding blankets I found are fiberglass rated for 1000 F, but the fireplace stuff is the ceramic rated at 3000. I also found out about another alternative - 100% clay clumping cat litter in an old cast iron hibachi!

The welding blankets come in both fiberglass and ceramic as well. Not sure which way the price will be better for you but here is one example.

The cat litter sounds like it will beat the price of everything though

Re: small piece of ceramic wool wanted

I did find one place that sells a 1'x2' piece of ceramic wool insulation for $20. That's probably the best option if I want to do this a few times and have it on hand.
