I am looking for a new / used / reconditioned scroll saw for a first time user. I have not done this type of cutting before and I would like to attempt some instarsia projects. I actually have an idea to create some motorcyle instarsia projects for a charity auction in May that I hope will bring in some much needed cash for a fellow rider who is in trouble.

This unit does not need to be new or top notch but i do want it to fuction properly. Any leads would be appreciated.

Mark, you might want to check out the "Found for Sale/Hot Deals" forum on this site - there has been a few threads started for Scroll saws

If intarsia is your only reason for getting one, you might also look at benchtop bandsaws. Speed of operation is a big upside for the bandsaw (you will be cutting a lot of hardwood that is thick by scrolling standards), but there are two drawbacks:
  1. You can't do inside cuts. This is generally not a big deal in intarsia. The most common inside cut is for eyes (the iris/pupil) and can be drilled.
  2. The larger kerf introduces some small gaps in curves if you do overlapped stack cutting. In most patterns it isn't enough to matter.
Ideally you want both, so you can get the speed and use the scroll saw for intricate and/or inside cuts.

I have used that saw (well, mine just like it) to cut 3/4" hardwood ply before. Power is not the problem; heat is. I broke a blade from being too aggressive and the steel had that blue look from too much heat. I don't recommend the saw for his needs either, but more because it lacks features of good scroll saws (using pin-less blades, solid table and variable speed), not because it lacks power. It has a universal motor which has issues with noise and maintenance (brushes) but it packs enough power. One minor upside of the universal motor is that the foot control for my carver works with it, giving me variable speed.

You will have to cut hardwood slow with any scroll saw; there is just isn't enough metal in the blade to dissipate the heat fast enough if you push it.
