I got the email below today, and it got me thinking are there products for disabled woodworkers and I just don't know about it? I wrote him back and said I could set him up with a router and a vacuum lift, but that I don't ahve any specific items to make it easier to do woodworking with 1 arm or 1 leg. If any of you know something, please let this guy know it seems like a worthwhile project he's doing. I told him about the sit down lathe from oneway and that is really the only product I've seen marketed to folks with any type of disability.

Thanks in advance for your help guys.

Hello sir,
I run the woodworking shop at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center's Arts & Crafts Center. Since working here I've had the opportunity to work with several of the amputee patients here at the hospital and I have been looking for ways to help them regain their confidence and help teach them new skills. As you can probably imagine it is difficult to work with some of the machines in a wood shop when a person happens to be missing a hand, arm or leg. I understand from your website that you are resellers of used equipment and was hoping that you might have or know where I might be able to locate tools or add-ons for machinery that might help in allowing these patients the ability to work with these tools. I look forward to meeting your representatives at the IWF show in Atlanta this month and hopefully we will be able to build a strong business relationship.
Thank you,
Christopher Wright

I know nothing about it, but if this for real, I would love for us to jump all over this. Even helping with the purchase.

Well, I plugged it into Google, but it was pretty bare. The only real hit was http://www.ableworkshop.com/index.html. This site has some pictures on modified band- and scroll saws.

There was an interesting article where someone describes how to do woodworking with a prosthetic -> http://www.lauramorris.ca/writing/lm_cdnwoodworking.pdf

The more I think about it, the more difficult it seems for someone with a disability to do woodworking safely. Certainly a worthwhile challenge to help out here.

When I clicked on the link at the bottom I got a flash message that it was infected. Anybody else experience that?

Jerry,
I had no problem with it. It appears to be a Walter Reed site.

Chris, you need to look at this web site... http://www.sawstop.com/ . I would assume that this same technology could also be applied to other woodworking saws and equipment. I feel sure that they would be interested in working with you and your organization. The videos on this site are quite interesting and informative. I wish this equipment was available when I was teaching woodworking to Junior/Senior High School students... Jack Sykes

I triple checked it, my AV system says it's clean. Do you get the same error if you download the link instead of clicking on it, and then opening it in Acrobat?

I am running foxfire for my browser and when I open the link it shows OK, when I open it with MS Internet Explorer my AVG shows that it is blocking a virus probe. My AVG shows it blocked the site from downloading a malicious toolkit.

That being said, if this site is ligit then I for one would like to help in any way I can. There are a lot of woodworkers that view the North Carolina Woodworker who I am sure have many different techniques for doing their projects. Jigs or modifications are made to equipment so that something or other can be accomplished. There is a huge Brain Bank out there that could be utilized to help some of these troops who gave body parts for us. Surely we can think of something to give back.

Most of us are older who have some physical disability yet still want to do our hobby/craft/vocation and have figured out a way to accomplish this. If ideas were thrown into a hat and everyone gave an opinion on how to modify it for a particular purpose then maybe we can help those who are willing to go further than their bodies will let them.

Just my tcw.

Phil, I am reasonably sure that the site is ligit. Whether or not it is infected, I'm not sure. I looked at the source code and see anything obvious.

Phil,

The website shows a military E-mail address for the webmaster. I sent him an E-mail last night telling him of a possible problem on that site. Lets see if I get an answer.
