Pen drilling jig

Now that I have been bitten by the dark side bug ( I can still see the light and it is good ) I would like to try my hand at a pen or two. Does any one coming to the picnic have a spare or unused pen drilling jig I can borrow for a couple weeks?

Re: Pen drilling jig

Scott, do you have a drill press? You don't really need a store bought jig. I use a wooden screw clamp. you can also make one very easily out of a piece of 2x4. Cut a couple 45deg notches and put a hinge on one end. this will give you the idea.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I might just get a chance to give them a try before the picnic.

Re: Pen drilling jig

Until I got a pen drill vice I did pretty well with a set of wood handscrews. Unless you are doing segmented blanks or trying to maximumize a thin blanks and have no room for error, just about anything will do. As long as the hole goes in on one end and out the other and keeps the sides intact you're good.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Thanks for putting things in proper simplified perspective, when I get the lathe running I would like to avoid the purchase of MORE specialized tooling

Well you can deny the inevitable for a little while. Then the darkside will completely assimilate you

Re: Pen drilling jig

Thanks to Ed things are getting dim at my house also. We have something in the works. More will be revealed at a later date. All this info will come in handy. But I can feel my world starting to get turned upside down.

Re: Pen drilling jig

Ed your design idea was just perfect. Here is my new pen jig thanks to a couple hours in the shop and a few scraps. I even turned the handles.

Re: Pen drilling jig

Great job Scott! I hate my store bought drilling jig. The one Ed suggested and you built looks like a better concept. I love it when a plan comes together!
