Need a small piece of plexiglass

I need a piece of 1/4 inch plexiglass (3 1/2 X 30). The smallest piece Lowe's has cost $36 (I think it is 48 X 4. I'm building a crosscut sled and need it for the blade guard. Does anyone know of a place that will cut it in smaller pieces and not charge for the whole sheet?

Re: Need a small piece of plexiglass

Check the trash can next to the plastic cutting area at both HD and Lowes. They often have scraps that can be had for very little.

Re: Need a small piece of plexiglass

First of all, I would recommend Lexan/Polycarbonate rather than Plexiglass/Acrylic. It cuts better and won't shatter if it ever accidently comes in contact with a spinning cutter.

I have ordered from this place at least 3 times and never had a problem.

Re: Need a small piece of plexiglass

Which Lowes are you going to?
The piece on top of the fan/filter in my current avatar (that's my clone - Ryan - who lives up to expectations that come with that far too often ) is a stock piece from Lowes in Cary. I mean bar code and everything; I pulled it out of a stack. There were several different sizes and thicknesses available. I think I paid around $5.

Edit - in case I change my avatar, here is the one I was referring to:

Re: Need a small piece of plexiglass

I think a couple members have you covered, but I'll add that commercial plastics houses are a great source for cheap offcuts - check the Yellow Pages.

They are a great source for slightly odd things like Delrin, really thick polycarb, etc.
