Looking for Box Elder

I'm looking for some red streaked Box Elder for bowl turning. We're located at the coast, let me know if anyone has any or if you know where I can get some.

Been on the lookout for a flaming box elder log myself. You'll have better luck them me, I'm sure.

Re: Looking for Box Elder

I found some on e-bay but the shipping put the price a bit high for me. I hope someone will be able to put me in touch with someone that has some.

Re: Looking for Box Elder

Sharon,
the best Boxelder I have found at decent prices has been on Ebay. There are several dealers in Arkansas and in the Saint Louis Area that always have some great stuff.Internal Stress on the tree creates the most red in Boxelder and the ice storms out that way seem to do the trick. If I run up on some names later this evening I will add another response with the info.Thanx,Greg B

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

I've read that the "flame" or "Red Streak" in Box elder comes from the Box Elder bug. Then I've read that it's a Fungus. Then... I've read it's a fungus caused by Box Elder excrement... ugggg... what's right? should I care? guess not? Anyways here's what the USDA has to say about Box Elder, they are usually pretty right. They should be, after all, it's our tax dollars hard at work ain't it?

http://www2.fpl.fs.fed.us/Techsheets...cernegeng.html

Growing up in IL, box elder was plentiful. I've seen lots of "flaming", curly and flaming curly box elder in my youthful days - it's some interesting stuff to say the least. I have not seen any box elder around here let alone any that's flaming.

Re: Looking for Box Elder

Jeff,
real good link,I have heard several variations on the red streaking. The one that stuck was from a guy and his son in the Arkansas area who always has some.He said be it a fungus or an internal defense mechanism that it always seemed to be more prevalent in trees that had nails, metal fencing or branches snapped off by storms that kept on growing after the stressful situation had passed. Those trees always had more and better streaking at many levels of the tree but originating from near the damage or intrusion

Sharon,
two names that I found so far are Riverridgesawmill-ebay user ID
GotWood-ebay ID aka turningblanks.net located in SC.They will combine shipping. GoodLuck,Greg B

Re: Looking for Box Elder

Thanks, I check the two e-bay connections. I just hate bidding on things, just tell me a price and I'll decide if I want to pay it. I've gotten things from e-bay before and even though there were pictures it's never the same as seeing it and putting your hands on it in person.
