Jeff, check the links I posted here. It's a technique that intrigues me but I've yet to have a need to try it.

Hi Anna,
From curiosity, what happened when you tried the router technique? Did your platform wobble or flex too much?
Thanks,
Todd

Okay, so I tried the router technique...AGAIN! This time it seemed to be working, I wasn't going too fast or even too slow, but the router bit into SOMETHING and THIS happened!

Anna-Catherine, what kind of router are you using? The reason that I ask is that it would appear to me that the bit came loose and/or slid downward in the collet as you were routing. (This is a chronic issue with craftsman routers.) I don't see any other way that the bit could have done that
I'm sorry that it didn't work! I can only imagine how disappointed you are!

Another follow-up question if I may...
Did you have a sled that you made for the router to sit on that slid across your side rails or was it just gliding between the two perpendicular pieces?
Final setup should look something like this:

That's okay Anna-Catherine, my big ole planer won't have any problem fixing that! Sunday afternoon should be fine, if you are still interested in coming this way! I will PM with a link to directions that don't add 45 miles to the trip (mapquest and every other mapping program likes to add Lumber to the Fayetteville/Charlotte trip!)

My router is a plunge type. It was sliding on top of the rails. One of the rails had a piece coming up out of it that I surmise the router hit then I lost control.
