Well I have managed to move the bulk of my stash into my shop. I still need to do some organizing so that you will be able to move and select wood.

Rather than use up a lot of band width for those who look at this post and aren’t really interested I have created a small gallery of random shots I have taken of the wood as it now sets in my shop. Follow this link:

http://www.pbase.com/mjcall/lumber&page=1

If you click on the thumbnails you will get a larger pic and a brief comment about the wood pictured.

Since I would like to give everyone at least 2 weeks notice I am planning to make Saturday Sept. 20 the first day of the sale. Start time on Saturday will be 9:00 AM.

In order to be fair to those who might be traveling for some distance on Saturday I plan on not opening the shop until the designated start time. Please don’t ask me to open for wood sale prior to that date and time. Perhaps, given the amount of wood I have, it wouldn’t make any difference but I personally would be unhappy if I traveled 4 hours only to find that the inventory had been picked over before the start date. I will be available all day from 8:00 AM on Sunday as well.

After these 2 days I will be happy to accommodate anyone who wishes to look at what I have on an appointment basis. Appointments can be made by PM, E-Mail, or phone, your choice. Dropping by unannounced would be at your own risk.

Rather than publishing directions to my shop I would prefer responding on an individual basis. Please PM me for directions and my phone numbers. I’ll get back to you. If you would like to get a general idea of where I’m located, map your way to Burnsville, NC 28714. You will be within 10 minutes of my shop.

As far as pricing is concerned the bulk lumber will be priced on a board foot basis. Specialty pieces on an individual basis depending on what they are. If you are looking for super cheap lumber this probably isn’t the sale for you. Almost all the material that will be available is FAS or better and figured or wide boards. I never felt the need to hoard plane sawn material since it was readily available as needed. Volume purchased will enter into the pricing as well. Like I said in an earlier post, negotiation will be acceptable.

A general idea of what the prices will be for the major species available, all on a board foot basis.

Ash - $1.50
Cherry - Shorts $2.50, FAS $4.00, Curly and Wide Board (10” plus) $5.00 - $7.00
Maple - Curly and Birdeye $3.00 - $6.00
White Oak – Figured $5.00 - $7.00
Walnut - $3.50 - $6.00 most of the walnut is air dried plain sawn. Lots of red.
Exotics – Piece by piece basis I don’t have a lot of any one species.

None of these prices are cast in stone but I have gotten a lot of requests for prices so this should give you some kind of idea. I will accept cash or checks. We can also do a PayPal deal as well. This computer is in my shop.

BTW I have done my level best to identify all the species but there is some material that I’m not sure of. I will reveal that on a case by case basis. Most of this material has been in my possession 10 years or better so my memory fails me in some cases.

Thank you for your interest in this project. Like I stated earlier I am looking for a good home for this wood. I purchased almost all of it in Wisconsin and moved it down here when I retired. Since I purchased most of it from a specialty hardwood yard I’m asking a fraction of what I paid just to get it into the hands of ppl who know what they’ve got.

As of the time of this writing I haven’t created the document with directions to the shop so it may take a day or two for me to get back to your PM’s requesting same.

Mike,

I'd love to have some of that beautiful wood and just to meet you and talk a while.

Unfortunately, I will be going to Alabama to help sort out my mother's estate about that time.

Hopefully I can make an appointment to see what's left at some later date.

Thanks very much for giving North Carolina Woodworker's first shot at this wonderful stash.

Mike:

Thanks for organizing this. I will not be able to attend as that is the day of my daughter's birthday party. I will find out if anyone of my local buddies is going and see if they can pick something up for me.

One question. I went through the pics and the descriptions do not give thicknesses. there are some widths but thickness, e.g., 4/4. 6/4, 8/4 etc. would be real helpful. Especially for the curly and figured cherry and maple. Thanks and good luck.

By far the bulk of the material is 4/4 some rough and some milled 2 sides. This is true of both Cherry and Maple. I do have some thicker stock in the wide boards but they are in the minority. There is one curly maple board with excellent figure. It is 11" wide by 6' long and 10/4 thick, milled both sides. Some the shorter wide maple boards that were purchased to be Windsor bench seats are 8/4, all and all though, like I said, the bulk of the material is 4/4.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am sure that will help everyone. I would LOVE to have the curly maple board with excellent figure that is 11" wide by 6' long and 10/4 thick, milled both sides. Maybe I can persuad someone to pick it up for me.

I plan to drive up to Burnsville for the sale and may bring a few other North Carolina Woodworker members with me on the 20th if they are interested (hint: Ozzie-x, dancam, mtrager to name a few). Doug, I would be willing to pick up the curly maple board for you and will be coming to Apex a week later and will see you on the shop crawl for a transfer. I'll leave the price negotiating to you if Mike is willing to reserve it for you.

Well since it has been a week since my original post and nobody has asked for directions I have to assume that either my prices or date were bad.

I still feel the pricing in general is fair for what the material is; so I am going to change the rules as far as opening my shop to lookers. If you wish to see my stash up close and personal just PM me with a time and date and I will do my best to accommodate you. If you wish to discuss the wood or time by phone let me know that as well. Either give me a phone number and a good time to call or request my numbers.

Thanks Mike

Mike,

Don't take anything personally, it's a logistics thing. You probably have more people in the eastern part of the state interested than you think, but you're 4 hours and at least a hundred dollars worth of gas away from us. Most people want the figured cherry and maple, and at those prices (which are fair), with gas, means that we have to spend 8 hrs traveling (round trip) and approximately $700 (cost of wood + gas) for a 100 bd/ft of wood. This just doesn't work out for everybody.

I would love to be able to drive an hour and pick through your wood, but it is not meant to be. Your best bet is the woodworkers in the western part of the state and maybe being available on the weekend of Oct.11th (Fall Pig Picking) for those who are attending.

Good luck with the sales, and I wish that I were closer.

Jimmy

Jimmy

I know full well what you are facing with the cost of gas and travel time, so nothing personal was taken by it. I do however appreciate your concern.

I originally just felt if there was going to be a number of ppl traveling here that I should try to make it fair for all. Since the interest doesn't seem to be strong I just decided that I would take the date out of the equation and make it first come, first served. I'm here almost everyday anyway so it is no big deal for me to welcome you into my shop. In fact being able to spend time with ppl on a one on one basis is a plus to me. This way anyone who wants to come can do it their own convenience. I have quite a bit of good material so I don't think there is much danger of it going quickly.

If anyone who is interested in coming wants to know the status of my stock before making a trip I will be glad to give them as much up to date info as I can. PM me with a phone number and a good time to call and we can chat.

If anyone is looking to share a truck and gas over here from your side of the state feel free to post in this thread.

Mike

I plan to come on the morning of September 20th as you originally set up and I expect to buy at least $200 worth. I know of Western NC Woodworker Association members that plan to come then as well. We look forward to seeing you at our WNCWA meeting this Saturday and hope that together we can drum up some more business among our membership for your high quality lumber. In addition, I spoke to Andrew Henderson (CaptnA) who is hosting the Fall Pig Roast on October 11th here in Arden and he's more than happy to see anyone bring wood to sell, so that is a great opportunity for fellow North Carolina Woodworker'ers to take advantage of you great stock. I'll be talking to you about help with my truck and a borrowed trailer if that adds some incentive for that date, too.

Dude your like sitting on all that lumber - just think of all the cool stuff that NCWoodWorkers will make out of it . That will help ease the pain... stay focused. Lumber is meant to be worked, made into something beautiful. There don't you fell better now?

I want to make this for the 20th, but I am struggling a little since I also want to drive up to Raleigh the following weekend for the shop crawl, plus I'm a little full on wood right now. If I don't make it on the 20th, maybe I'll schedule something a little later.
