Need old style Euro Hinges A lady hired me to remount a kitchen cabinet and rehang the doors that used to be on the cabinet. However all the hinge hardware got lost over the 2 years the cabinet doors got kicked around in their basement. I did remount the cabinet. Didn't know the hardware was missing till I got the cabinet rehung.
These are an older style of Euro hinge from 1981 (ordersheet was attached to back of cabinet).
The attached picture shows the cabinet face cutout for the hinge and several views of a hinge off of another cabinet.
I have had no luck in finding these hinges. Rockler, Woodworkers Supply, Briggs hardware, Raleigh Hardwoods and a raft of other places have not seen them. At least the guy at Briggs Hardware knew what they were. I even rode over to the Habitat place and looked around for an old cabinet that might have them.
I need 4 of these hinges. I know I could probably modify the faceframe and retrofit a current style but the lady's budget won't allow that and I'm not going to make a ongoing career project out of this.
Ideally I'd like a name of a local place or a place on the web where they could be ordered. I'm through driving around to try and find them.
Anybody run across these beasts??
Thanks, Dave |

I have never seen a Euro hinge like that, of course I had no idea what a Euro hinge was back in '81 (I was only 11 )
Good luck on your quest, I am interested in what you can find.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Thanks, Dave Dave,
It appears to me tha tthe hinge you took off one of the doors is equivalent to a more current 165 degree model, but IMHO whoever mounted the hinges in the first place did it wrong. The face frame is never carved out as is shown; the installer should have used a Face Frame Hinge Base that mounts on teh 3/4" thick straight edge of the face frame and, in many cases extends bach to provide a mounting area for the hinge itself. Take a look at the drawings on Page 2 of this hinge section from the Custom Service Hardware Online Catalog. In the top right corner of this page, you'll see the adjustments available for a concealed Euro hinge that is mounted on a "frameless" cabinet -- these are cabinets made with the face frames flush with the side walls of the cabinet and the Euro hinges are mounted with a plate that screws to the side wall of the cabinet.
In the case of your cabinet, the Face Frames are not flush with the sides -- they extend over the opening by nearly an inch (+/-). The installer should have used a Face Frame Mounting Plate (see the diagrams down the center left next to the listing for Ecomat/Intermat Mounting Plates). I believe you need to replace the Face Frame section that has been "altered" and then select a 1/2" or 3/4" overlay style of F.F. mounting plate to go with a new set of Intermat hinges (See the charts at lower right on page 3 to find the correct one). Check the overlay of the other doors to try to match them. I would probably use a 110 or 125 degree opening hinge. CSH has a $50 minimum order, but you should be able to find an appropriate hinge locally.
Hope this helps.

Picture #1 is a close up of lower left corner of the front of the faceframe of the cabinet. its where the hinge faceframe end mounts.
Yes, the face frame does extend past the inside edge of the side of the cabinet by probably 1". My guess was this was some early designs on how to put Euro hinges on traditional faceframe cabinetry back in the early 1980's.
The whole kitchen is done this way and there are at least 20 doors in the kitchen. The cabinets were made commercially. I don't know who made them and I have buried the build label now that I have remounted the cabinet.
The piece in picture two is the part that fastens into that half moon cutout on the faceframe. This piece is also included in the complete hinge pictures #3 and #4. It matches perfectly (cabinet half moon cutout and this piece are made for each other). If you look closely at the cabinet picture you will even see where the boring bit sliced a shallow half moon cut out of the side of the cabinet.
I went to the Hettich site (impressive site/info there) and yes, the door half of my hinge looks like one of their types, however all the cabinet half pieces assume a narrow faceframe.
I'm going to send a email to the Hettich site and see if they can offer any advice.
Keep the ideas coming.

Need old style Euro Hinges I think you are on the right track, but would like to make one suggestion. I believe the cut out area is to make a half or full overlay hinge work with such a wide face frame. Back in the day, I don't think there were many euro style hinges that would work on face frame cabinets, and this could be a scenario like that. I have a few hettich hinges that look extremely similar, so it could be just as easy as trying a set. I have a few pairs if you are interested. |
