Gotta drill some pen blanks...

Guys/Gals,

The only thing keeping me from completing my fateful journey to the dark side is to find an accurate, reliable (cheap?) way to drill pen blanks. I can't seem to locate a drill press, or any other tool that will drill the depth required for pen blanks without spending hundreds of $$. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks!

Don

Don, I have not done it with a pen yet but I drilled a screw driver handle on the lathe. I mounted the bit in the drive end. Then marked my centers on the stock. After aligning the bit and live center with my marks I pushed the stock toward the bit by adjusting the live center. You have to hold the stock during the drilling process.

Re: Gotta drill some pen blanks...

Drill them on the lathe. If you have a chuck you can use that to hold the square pen blank. Then all you need is a drill chuck to go in your tail-stock

This will hold your bit and while the blank is spinning in the headstock chuck, you just advance the tail-stock.
You can also turn the blank round between centers. Mount it in a pin or collet chuck and then drill it. This is the most accurate way to get a centered hole.

HTH,
Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Gotta drill some pen blanks...

It's defintely most accurate drilling on the lathe.
