hey there folks,

first off, thanks for all the great advice about making the best of a small shop. lots of good ideas. got things cleaned up in there last weekend and rearranged a little bit. things are certainly coming along...

i'm starting a cabinetmaking class at ab-tech this weekend and i need to pick up some good project wood. i'm planning on building a roll top desk. i was thinking about oak, but i'm of course open to other ideas. i was wondering where i should look for decent prices on good lumber in the asheville area. thanks for any input...

here come friday...have a good weekend.

Good luck with the class. As a newbee, three plus years into making furniture, I look forward to the months to come as you begin your show and tell. It is a world like no other. I wish you as much pleasure as I have had. BTW, roll top desk cries for oak. I am making an oak desk simular to the roll top minus the roll top. Lorraine

Golder,

I would recommend that you check out both our listing of Sawyers and Wood Suppliers, found under the "Where Are" heading on the top menu bar. As you'll see, each list is broken down by region. I can recommend Mountain Sawyers for very good quality Red and White Oak (plain or quaeter sawn), and Bee Tree Hardwoods in Swannanoa as well. If you are coming to the WNCWA meeting on Saturday, it is being held at the shop of the owners of Mountain Sawyers.

For the best wood around Asheville you should get in contact with Mike Callihan. He's thinning out his collection of fine hardwoods. You can get the deal of a lifetime.

Mike Callihan is planning on attending the WNCWA Meeting on Saturday morning -- I sent you some info about the meeting -- it will be at 375 Depot Street in Asheville at 9:30 AM. Hope to see you there.

Go see Mike Callihan over in Burnsville (not too far from you). I was just over to his place and he definitely has some wood that would be nice for a roll top desk. I see some others have sent his contact info.. Good luck.
