While sawing up cedar logs for deck lumber, I ran across one log that had a very unusual grain pattern of red, purple and cream. The grain almost looked like fire in a way. When I got near the center of the log, lo and behold I hit an old coke bottle that exploded my band mill blade. So it’s my guess that somehow this eastern red cedar grew up around a coke bottle and that’s why the grain is so unusual.

So I set a bunch of boards aside in my shop since it was so unusual, figured I would do something with it later. Later came and I cut up approximately 80 1x1-6” pen blanks, stuffed them into a USPS flat rate box and set them to a friend who makes pens.

He turned a pen out of one of the blanks and called me asking if I had any more said I should sell them. He calls it a “fire pen”. Granted I’ve never made or sold pen blanks till now so I’ve been real hesitant about getting started.

I have several more boards with this grain pattern that I quickly can cut and trim out the knots into pen blanks (1x1x6) the cedar is dry and should be good to go for making pens right out of the box.

Price is $60.00 plus $8.10 (shipping) for a united states postal service flat rate box, the box holds approximately 80 1x1-6” pen blanks this figures to about .75 a blank plus shipping. This is half of what I was told I should sell them for. But we at NCWoodworker always get the first pick and best price, least we do in my book.

Please reply if you’re interested in purchasing a box full, and we can work out details through PM. I could also do smaller orders to if 80 blanks are to many.

Here’s a picture of a pen made from the fancy grained eastern red cedar blanks.

Thanks to those who have PM'ed me. It's time for me to clean out my inbox and start cutting cedar. Looks like a box of 80 may be a bit much. The offer still stands for lesser amounts @ .75 for per 1x1x6 blank. Only thing is I have no control how much the the US Postal Service charges for delivery. I'll have to check on differnt flat rate box prices and post the prices here a little later.

Thanks

Did a little checking on flat rate box prices - here are the choices (not many at that)

Priority Mail Flat Rate Box 11" X 8.5" X 5.5" - Any weight, any State, $8.10.

Priority Mail Flat Rate Box 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8" - Any weight, any State, $8.10.

Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope 12.5" x 9.5" - 4.05 - Any weight, any state, $4.05.

I know I can cram about 80 blanks in the 11" X 8.5" X 5.5, I'm guessing around 40 in the 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8 and 20 or so in the envelope.

Just so you can get an idea of the shipping costs.

Thanks

To heck with those postage charges. I got to meet Jeff and his lovely daughter when he dropped off some of the pen blanks. They are great figure and I can't wait to turn a few pens with them.

By the way Jeff, you forgot your bucket. I'll set it on the back of the carport by the grill and you can pick it up at your convenience.

George

Gator, was great meeting you My daughter even enjoyed herself. Nice selection of pens, fan pulls and bottle stoppers you made. Your shop is really well orginzed, I could take a few lessons from you. I hope the pen blanks work out well for you.

Funny you should mention the bucket, we were about half way to CVS, my daughter was talking my ear off. I looked in the back seat, no bucket. I thought she grabbed it and she thought I did. Well that's what happens when I'm in a hurry. You can keep the bucket if you want, it's no biggie, I got a few of them laying around.

Thanks
