I'm getting the itch to pick up the American Elm butt log that I had to leave earlier this year. Was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing the lumber from it. If so let me know what dimensions your looking for and your price per bf.

It's a fairly large log, should produce 16+++ inch wide slabs that are mostly straight grained with some crotch figure near the top. You can view this thread http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/s...ead.php?t=2994 to get an idea what the lumber should look like. If it looks anything like the two logs right above the crotch, I milled from the same tree earlier this year, It will be some very nice lumber indeed. BTW the lumber from these two logs has already been sold.

If no one is interested, I'll probably just slice them up into electric guitar blanks or slabs and sell them on ebay or take them to auction or something, don't know yet. But wanted to give the fine folks at NCwoodworker the first shot at lumber from this rare tree.

I would prefer to sell the entire load from the log to one person, it don't matter how you want it cut, turning blanks, lumber, slabs, however... just let me know the dimensions your looking for and we can work out details.

Send me a Private Message if interested.

Thanks

How tight is the grain on Elm? Is it like oak or more like walnut?

I would say more like walnut, swirls of purple, red and cream as pictured in this forum ---> http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/s...ead.php?t=2994

Is it an open grain wood? I guess I should have worded my original question better.

Thanks,

John

Here's some info on American Elm (Southern soft Elm/ Slippery Elm)wood

http://www.hattonbrown.com/vserver/h...rticleKey=2383

It is considered an open grained wood.

They compare it to Red Elm for grain structure, but if you don't know what Red Elm grain is like then you still don't know how "open" the pores are. Just checking for rockers and chairs...... I hate grainfilling chairs. Very laborious and very tough to do well.

Thanks,

John

Man, we need a big box of mixed sample woods so we can touch and feel some of these woods. Sorta like the old time door to door salesman that took his case of samples around for people to see.

Clay, I think that the Forestry (Dendrology) Dept. at State has a big display of the different wood types. I know that UT's Forestry dept did and it was one of the most interesting things I've ever seen. It lined a wall in a hall that was at least 200' long.

Clay, there's also a turner in Rutherfordton that has a nice collection of wood samples. It's located in a Printing business just north of town. It's really pretty neat. He worked in the forestry business for many years and has a great love of wood. He has samples with index cards for a large variety of wood. Also sells bowls and stuff out of the print shop.

Cathy, do you know about this guy???

Of course you could always pick up a wood sample identification kit next time you are in WC.

Here is a link to the kit.
