Hello all, my name's David and I live in Bahama, NC (north Durham). Glad to have found this group. I'm pretty new to woodworking - have gotten along pretty well with all sorts of DIY projects and have been thinking for quite some time about getting into woodworking. I have a garage that I'm turning into a makeshift workshop until I get my dream of my own separate building. I have a decent table saw, any suggestions on what tool would be a good next purchase?

I noticed the big auction going on in Greensboro ("mother of all lumber auctions" in the Hot Deals) and was wondering if anybody may want to go in on a lot or two - I figured it may be a good time to start a stock of scraps to be.

I was also wondering if any of you know of good web resources for ideas / designs for kid's furniture. I'd like to make a good, sturdy crafts-etc table and chairs for my 2.5 year old nephew (I figure he won't complain too much if there are a few imperfections in my first project).

Anyhow, looking forward to making plenty of dust and learning lots from ya'll.

Thanks,
David

Welcome aboard, David. I made my second big tool a bandsaw, so that I could make some curvy things. You can get by with a jigsaw, but a bandsaw with a decent sized table is so much easier to control. Can't help with the auction because I don't room now to cuss a cat! Good luck.

Re: Newbie in Bahama

Welcome David, always great to have another one. I would probably chose a good router as my next major tool, they are very handy to have.
Most kids furniture are just smaller versions of full size stuff. It's really easy to scale things down to their size. Most kids are about half the size of adults, so just halve the measurements. I have made a lot of stuff for my daughter, you can see them in my photo album. Making things for her was my catalyst into woodworking.
I look forward to your input in the forums and hopefully seeing some pictures of things you make.
Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Newbie in Bahama

Welcome to the site, David!

As far as buying tools, everyones priorities may be a little different. When I retired back in 2004, all I had was a bad router, skilsaw and a couple of drills. After my second tablesaw purchase, I got really tired of paying premium prices for S4S hardwood and decided it was time shop for a jointer and planer. Then it was onto a bandsaw and a decent drillpress.

Hope you have fun building out your new shop and find what you are looking for relative to furniture for kids. The internet (Google), I have always found gives me some great ideas.

Happy to have you with us!

Wayne

Re: Newbie in Bahama

David,

Welcome aboard! I like the router for a necessary tool but in the past my theory had always been, if I don't have it, I need it!

I find lots of free plans on the internet. It's a good way to jar your creativity too! I've built stuff I never even thought I would ever try.

Welcome. I too live in Durham Co. I live in N. Durham adjacent to the Eno River, so feel free to PM me if you have some questions about tools. I am a self proclaimed "Tool Nerd".

Anyway, there is a great wealth of info from the folks on this site, I have absorbed way more than I have contributed so far, but as my experience grows I intend on sharing more as I progress along.

Re: Newbie in Bahama

Welcome to our virtual sawdust pile, David. I lived in Durham for 18 years before I retired and moved to the beautiful mountains here in western NC. We're glad you found the site and are certain you'll gain great information. If I were you, I'd first invest in some Raffle Tickets for those next tools you'd like -- if you are serious about getting good lumber and building significant projects, then a planer is a great investment, then an 8" jointer, a bandsaw, a drum sander, a compound miter saw... oops, I got a little carried away, but then you'll need all of those and more....
