Intro

I am retired. About 1995, after watching Roy Underhill on PBS and buying and reading a couple of his books, I became interested in green wood working and traditional methods of working wood. Since retiring in 2000, I have built 2 shaving horses, a pole lathe and various benches and have acquired numerous old hand tools. I enjoy doing demos of old methods of woodworking. I also have a Jet lathe and a Shopsmith, both of which I use to make bowls and other wood items which I try to sell, while demonstrating, at events such as the Founders Day in Gold Hill and the Autumn Jubilee at Dan Nicholas Park. I have met only one or two other like minded wood workers and would like to know others. I am a member of the Southern Piedmont Woodturners in Concord and the Association of Pole Lathe Turners in England. I also enjoy carving bowls, spoons, walking sticks, etc and have carved faces on some of my other work. I have read several of the threads on this site and picked up good info from doing so. Looking forward to learning more.

Re: Intro

Welcome! Sounds like you have found a new home. As you have probably noticed, we have folks at all skill levels in most types of wwing. We also LOVE pictures, so please request a photo album. Glad to have you and hope you enjoy the group!

By the way, there are few phrases we use that knowing them and how they are intended (which is not necessarily how it sounds) are:
You suck - the only time you should ever even see this is when someone acquires a new tool/shop.

WGD - Woodguy (a member) is credited with the ever increasing need for more tools in all members, so WGD is just referencing that you've fallen to this addiction. Check out his gallery sometime and you will understand.

There is a lexicon under the heading North Carolina Woodworker Info box at the top of the page.

Welcome Steve. As Cathy said watch out for WGD. Once bitten there is no known cure. At least this board will provide you with support when the itch kicks in.

Re: Intro

Steve: Welcome to North Carolina Woodworker. You'll find this to be the most helpful and friendly (if a bit crazy) bunch of folks anywhere. They have bailed me out several times by answering my questions and making suggestions. And I mean on ANY thing.

I'm just to the south of you, shop near Richfield, so if we can be of help to you in any way, just holler. We have some sources for green wood also, though most of what we do is in outdoor furniture.

Not knowing what your needs are, there are several sawyers on here who can usually provide anything you need. They go by names like Ivey, Kyle, saw4u, Jeff and others. Just post your question or inquiry, and you WILL get a response.

Good luck and Happy Holidays.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Intro

Welcome, Steve. I am still waiting for the woodworking question no one on here can answer. I am more a wood-annoyer than a woodworker.
