Talking Hi from new member in Willow Springs

Hi everyone, my name is Mike and I just joined this forum. I've been a woodworker for a few years now, but just recently moved to the Raleigh area from Minnesota.
I must say it has been an interesting adjustment. I've been trying to locate sources of wood for various projects, and have been a little disappointed with limited choices at Lowe's & HD down here. Lately I've been trying to find some cedar (2x4's & 1x8's used for decks) to use for some outdoor furniture, but haven't found anything other then cedar siding. I also hate to say it, but I do miss having a Menards around. I could always count on finding a piece of walnut, cherry, maple, oak or poplar when needed. Haven't been able to find that kind of choice down here (yet, still looking!), but I have been to Klingspor's wodworking shop a few times and that has been helpful. I've picked up some cypress from there, to use for my outdoor furniture.
Still trying to find other woodworking stores as well.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my story.
Mike

Re: Hi from new member in Willow Springs

Hi Mike, Welcome to the club! You'll find a great bunch of people here always ready to give advice - good or bad!! Take a look under the "where are?" link for wood suppliers that we would all recommend. I look forward to seeing some pics of your work.

Re: Hi from new member in Willow Springs

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the group. Always good to have another woodworker join us. There are a number of sawyers in this group who can provide the types of wood you're looking for. And as David suggested, try the "Where are" function to find some commercial wood outlets. One of my personal favorites is Wall Lumber in Mayodan, NC. VERY reasonable prices. That being said, you probably can't beat the price or quality of the output of our member sawyers. Just post a note requesting a type or quantity and I'm sure one or more of them will answer with what they have available and where they are.

Again, welcome.

Ray

Welcome Mike!

When I joined everyone couldn't wait to tell me that pictures count for a lot here (to say the least), so I can't believe I'll be the first to say this but, "no pictures=didn't happen!"

So be sure to post pictures often and don't hesitate to ask for help, everyone here is really great!

Thanks for the advice Joe, and thanks to everyone else for the welcomes.

I was just in the process of getting some pictures uploaded, but had to find the right reference first.
I've uploaded some pictures of an entertainment center (and matching end tables) I built over the last 2 years. I used plans from the Sept 2004 issue of Wood Magazine, with some changes. I used oak instead of cherry, and went with frame & panel set up for the sides & backs of the tower units.

I wasn't able to completely finish the entertainment center, primarily due to the move down here. And since I really don't have a place to put this center (not as a complete unit anyway) in my new house here, I don't see it ever getting finished. I'm still able to use the individual components on their own, but I had to move one of the towers up to the bonus room.

regards,
Mike

Re: Hi from new member in Willow Springs

Welcome Mike, it's great to have you with us. You ain't kin to anyone by the name of David, are you? The Raleigh area is a great place for wood suppliers, there is at least a half dozen within 30 minutes of town, and a few more within an hours or so. Probably your best source for lumber isn't at any store, it's the local sawyers that are members of this site. They're the best source to get reasonably price wood, locally harvested, milled and dried, and often delivered to HF parking lot. Your pics look great, you'll fit in really well around here Although you might make some of us with little talent jealous
I look forward to your input in the forums, and possibly seeing you around. If you ever need anything just holler, I'm right down the road at the 40/42 intersection.
See you around!
Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.
