Hey all, I just got word of this site from the guys over at Woodcraft. I am starting woodworking as a way to fix up my house. Most of my projects are done b/c I have some need at the house, built ins, shoe cabinet, etc. I've never worked with anyone else and I'm sure I must do some stuff totally wrong but most projects come out all right

My two recent projects were reef aquariums and stands for my office(cube) and to replace one a home.

Here are a couple of pics

Re: Hi from Chapel Hill

Welcome to NCWWer Wes!
Great intro, nice website, and beautiful "reef" pixs
I've spent a lotta time in Chapel Hill . . . school, work, and play. Regretfully, I couldn't afford to live there So I ended up 7 miles away in Durham County. But I'm heading over this afternoon for a Friday beer and watch a little ACC action

Your reef building skills are notable. Takes me back to snorkeling Carribbean, Bahamas, Tahiti, and best of all . . . Great Barrier Reef

Cheers,
Roger

Wes,
Which Festool do you have? The 55 or 75? I've been looking hard at it because I'm shopless, and I hear nothing but good about it. How do you like it?

Hi Wes,

Welcome to the site. The tanks look beautiful, keep the work coming. If you're around on May 17th come on over to the Picnic(family included) and meet a few of us.

Re: Hi from Chapel Hill

I have the 55. I tried it out first at Woodcraft before I bought it. I sold my junky contractor table saw the next day, if that tells you anything....
Obviously the downside is every accessory cost 10x what it should but its unlike any saw I've ever used. Its called a circular saw but it seems to be in a category of its own. One thing need to do is build a jig for cutting narrow strips that is also repeatable. Thats the one thing I've seen that a tablesaw can do easily that is hard with this saw. The 55 has a bunch of power and the only time I wish I had the 75 was riping Jabota (aka Brazilian Cherry) which is tough as nails and I won't use again anyway.

I wish I could go to the Picnic but I'm going to be in Japan for my brothers wedding.

Re: Hi from Chapel Hill

Welcome Wes, I am glad you could join us. Your reefs are outstanding...I think I found Nemo
Many members get to get either for planned gatherings or just one on one hanging outs. You might not want to endure the drive, but you're welcome to stop by my shop anytime, and I show you how I do things wrong

I look forward to your input in the forums and seeing some more of your pictures.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Hi from Chapel Hill

Wes, I have an idea for a simple & easy way to rip thin strips. PM me if you're interested & I'll follow up.

Hi Wes,

Welcome to the North Carolina Woodworker sawdust pile. As to your concern about doing things 'wrong'... the photos of your work say you're doing terrific... besides, if the result is good, then you did it the right way.
