Hello from Hendersonville, NC

Hello group - my name is Linda Hendricks and we moved here about 3 years ago from Florida (no sighing please).

Born in Connecticut and lived there most of my life. I have also lived in Rhode Island, Arizona, Arkansas and Florida.

I have never done woodworking or carving before, but the art of chip carving looks very interesting to me. I grew a lot of gourds which are perfect for chip carving is they are thick enough. I have been painting, burning and using gourds for at least 10 years now.

I do some artwork, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil, and just about anything else except oil paintings. I do artwork but I didn't say I was particularly good at it.

My favorite designs to use are the very old Celtic designs. I have just decorated a bluebird house with a celtic design for my 3 year old grandaughter for Christmas.

I would be interested in meeting others from Hendersonville who also do woodworking, burning and/or carving so I can learn from them. I will also be learning from everyone here just by reading the postings and checking out the photos. There is some wonderful workmanship happening here and I love it.

I do believe I'm really going to enjoy this site, all the forums and the people here.

Welcome to the forum Linda. I'm glad you decided to join us. Lot of great folks here that know all about carving (sorry, I'm not one of 'em ). Just jump in with your questions, you'll get more help than you can shake a gouge at .

Welcome Linda, I am glad you found us. I would really enjoy seeing some of your gourds, they sound really cool. If you get a chance please post some picutres of them.
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Hello from Hendersonville, NC

Linda, welcome to the friendliest woodworking site in the universe from a fellow resident of Hendersonville. As TracyP said in his post, we're sorry you hadn't signed up earlier because we have a marvelous picnic in nearby Arden yesterday with some 30 North Carolina Woodworker members plus guests.

I am also President of a group of woodworkers called the Western NC Woodworkers Association here in the Asheville-Weaverville-Hendersonville-Clyde area that meets once every month to share our woodworking knowledge. We have just over 50 members and meet at the shop and conference area of one of our members, unless we have a special event. This month, we participated at the Fall 2008 Gathering mentioned above and many of our members that attended brought examples of their work. One of our members is a very accomplished chip carver and gave a hands-on demonstration at a recent meeting. Our November meeting will be a BBQ and potluck luncheon with spouses to be held on the 8th at a Community Center in Fairview and we would like to invite you (and since you said "we", your spouse if you're married) to join us. And just to allay your fears, we have women members, too! I look forward to seeing more of your work and to meet you. I'll be sending out details for our meeting in the next few weeks and would like to add you to our emailing list -- don't post it, but send me a Private Message (PM) if you're interested.

Again, welcome to the site.

Re: Hello from Hendersonville, NC

Welcome Linda!!!!! I am fascinated by chip carving too, and want to learn more. I live about an hour from you. Other woodworking that I do is scrolling, and little turning and a little, little carving. Glad you joined us. Please post pictures of your work (especially the Celtic stuff - too cool).
