Formal Introduction / New Member

I am a little late introducing myself here at NC Woodworker. I have made several posts but have never formally introduced myself. My name is Marty Baucom and I live just outside Winston Salem on the Lexington side. I got started in woodworking when I was in my teens by my interest in home audio. I had always been around woodworking because my Grandfather had a garage shop behind his house and we were always building or making something out of wood. The connection with home audio and woodworking is I started building my own stereo speakers. This really is what sparked the interest in making sawdust. I have primarily worked with particle board and MDF with a little bit of veneer work mixed in. My recent passion has also been building stereo speakers but also building furniture out of hardwoods. I have recently been able to rebuild my shop after a few life changes. My background is in home furniture, I have over 15 years experience in furniture upholstery. I have worked for several top companies in High Point over the years. I also have a small re upholstery shop in part of my basement. After years of pulling fabric I decided a career change was in order so I took some classes and received some certifications and started teaching computer repair, networking and Microsoft certifications. I am currently working with my Uncle in his cabinet sales business. I left the teaching profession to help the increased business my Uncle has and his failing health. We sell stock box cabinets to large construction projects for apartments and condos all over NC, SC, VA and GA. I have posted some pics of my shop in progress, dust collector remote I made and my router table project. I welcome any comments or suggestions. Thanks for everyone’s comments and ideas about my workbench I am converting.

Marty

Re: Formal Introduction / New Member

Hi Marty,

I saw the remote you made and it looks well done, but did you save any money? The remotes are about $50 new. The reason I ask is that I have made a number of blastgate switches in the past, but don't anymore because the new ones are cheap. Below is a pic of mine and a link to more pictures.

Anyway welcome aboard!

Welcome Marty! I too once had an interest in audio gear for the home. (Buying, not building) I still have a pretty good appreciation for home audio gear.

Your extremely broad exposure to furniture construction will definitely be an asset to everyone here.

Look forward to your future posts.

Take Care,

Wayne

Re: Formal Introduction / New Member

Welcome Marty, it sounds like you will have a wealth of information to share. I built a pair of towers and a center channel for my theater with the design, speakers and crossover coming from GR Research and I also built a sub based on a design from Parts Express. My woodworking looks a lot better than my soldering.

I'd be curious to hear how your DC remote costed out, I've been debating buying/making one myself for my 220V DC.

Re: Formal Introduction / New Member

Tom I spent around $45.00 on all the parts and pieces to make my remote. I knew I could buy one for about the same price but I saw it as a challange to build one and I enjoy electronics. Mine is nowhere as elaborate as the one you made Tom. I would be interested in your schematics. If anyone needs any advice or help with furniture upholstery feel free to send me a message. Thanks for all the warm welcomes.
