This is Rodger Barrow owner of East Wake Hardwoods and The Woodworkers of North Carolina Gallery (The WONC Gallery). I sell retail furniture grade lumber,(domestic and exotic) in lumber, slabs, and turning stock. The Gallery is set up strickly for the purpose of promoting the woodworkers of North Carolina. I offer a discount to any NCWoodworker member who brings in their coupon. Some of you may be interested in the load of old Walnut that I received yesterday. This is the neighbor hood of 3000 bft. 4/4 and 400 bft. of 8/4. This stock has been drying for over 35 years and came ot of Virginia. Some boards have some issues that I would make allowances for but there is still a tremendous amount of high quality walnut, rich in color that we just don't get to see today. Wide boards are also available. This stock is selling at $4.00 per bft. (regular price is $5.87). With your discount that would put it at $3.60 per bft. If you hav not been out yet to see my wood or check out the gallery, please come by. I think that you will enjoy it. Rodger | | Views: 1207 |

So I looked through the website, compared the purple heart and some other prices to the Hardwood Store 25 minutes away. Most prices seemed to be comparable or better so even though I love the Hardwood store, having heard nice things about East Wake HW I grabbed a couple of hundred bucks, and drove out with my father who is visiting from NJ.
An hour and 20 minutes drive to get there, and the prices were double those on the website. Some were more than double.
Now I don't hold it against EWHW if that's what they have to charge. But I could have saved 20 bucks in gas and more than 2 1/2 hours driving if I'd known the actual prices.
If this post seems petty, I apologize. I'm kind of mad right now.
It's actually a pretty nice stock of lumber with some boards that are spectacular. And the guy at the store was very pleasant. So if you don't care about the prices, go for it. But for me, I wasted a large part of my day and was far to annoyed to buy anything when I can save money and have a larger selection far close to home.

If it was off by a small amount, say less than .25 bf, I wouldn't mind too much.
Anything more than that and I would not purchase from them on principal alone.

Todd Todd Sorry to hear that - this does raise an interesting question. I've been looking at some of the local lumber yard web pages for several months, I can honestly say, dispite that fact that stumpage for some species of local hardwood have doubled in the past 60 days. I have not noticed any of the local lumber yards I look at frequently change their web page price lists.
So the question is: How current is the prices lists on the internet? Lumber is a comodity, I doubt the price remains constant for several months at a time. Expecially since I know what the market value of local hardwood stumpage is and have experienced it's price fluxuation first hand.
Thanks |

I don't know how fast the prices have changed and the guy at EWHW was apologetic that their web site was so out of date. He said they can't update their current web page on their own, only the web host can.
I figure that in that situation you probably shouldn't try to list prices online, and I think they probably know that know. Having heard such good things about them, I suspect they'll fix it by either taking the prices off or getting control of the site so they can keep it up to date. There are ways to link your spreadsheets to your website so your site prices will update when you change your excel price list. Not a bad way to run a web page.
Hopefully nobody else will have the same experience I did since it's so irritating, but I do understand it's not easy to keep a site up to date, so I'm not so mad anymore.

Here's a pretty decent site I have not seen anyone mention before for super wide or figured wood. Berkshire Products Inc. home page
Thanks |

Thanks hey Jeff..I was asking toddler what prices specifically were double and was there a reason behind being different than the website. Just curious since Rodger is a pretty good fellow. |

I've heard Rodger is a good guy and I'm not trying to make him seem otherwise.
I was looking mostly for Purple heart, and maybe some Mahogany. I'd have loved to grab some Bloodwood too even though it was not on the web page, but given how I was feeling, that wasn't going to happen.
And it certainly isn't that every price from the web site that has doubled or that they are outrageously priced. Rodger's sight says he tries to offer fair prices and I suspect he does. On what I wanted, they're just MUCH higher than the prices online.
EWHW had some really nice large boards for fine furniture makers, and a nice supply for any woodworker. For someone in that area, they're convenient, seem pleasant, and I'm sure they're very nice to deal with. But I'm pretty far away, not looking to buy a $400 figured board to make a masterpiece, so while I'm not mad any more, I'm still annoyed at my wasted time and gas and won't make the trip again just to go there.
My understanding is their web site prices are so far off because they can't update the prices themselves. They know about the issue and it sounds like they want to fix it. Hopefully before anyone else is as dumb as me and makes the trip without confirming the prices! Maybe they can simply add a date to the price list??
Anyway, I do appreciate that they offer a discount to NCWoodworker members and hope your future dealings with them are great.

The Internet is only as good as what people input into it. You should have checked out Klingspor, they always seem to have a good selection of PH, and at good prices - $4-5 a BF.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

They also often stock bloodwood, I think last time it was $8-9 bf....

I'll consider checking out Kingspor's if I get into Raleigh for something else. Gonna head to the Hardwood store first since it's so much closer. I don't think they have Bloodwood, but the have Jatoba, Purple Heart, Walnut and Bubinga which are reasonably stiff and I believe have comparable expansion rates. I'll seal the entire guitar in shellac as an MC seal before it's laquered, but I still want the woods to be close.
Happy Easter,

My web prices are NOT up to date, as Todd found out. I do not have the ability to change the prices myself and it is hard to get changes made. I am working to correct that as it is a very serious issue for me. As Kyle can attest to; prices have gone wild in the last 1-2 years.
I can't even buy Purple Heart at my web price. Again, I apologize. Todd, if you would be so kind as to send me your mailing address to my email address( rodger@eastwakehardwoods.com), I will send you a check for $20.00 to cover your gas cost and possibly as small part of your aggrivation. While my PH price is higher than the web price, it is currently at $7.60 / bft. which is still cheaper than Klingspor. I do also have curly PH at $13.00 / bft. Todd, I have worked pretty close to Hill at The Hardwood Store of NC and I think very highly of him. You should patronize him as often as possible. I also know Kyle and think alot of him. Those of you who live near Kyle should support him. None of us in the lumber business are getting rich doing it. Mostly it is the joy of finding beautiful wood, working with it, and having it available to our customers. As suppliers , we can't be or supply everything to everybody but we try to find a nich that will allow us to meet
some of the demand in our areas. None of us want to upset a customer and again I apologize. Most of my customers know that I will do what ever it takes. My customer base is mainly from Chapel Hill to the coast. I also sell nationally and internationally. Every inquiry that I have had to my web site so far have asked for the current prices. This goes for phone inquiries also. This is the first time that I have had a customer come in expecting to see a web price. BUT it is my site and I have to be responsible for the errors on it. Again, Todd send me your address and I will try to make ammends.
