WG Maloof Rocker Class Day 1

Well guys we are officially off and running. The group got together a little before 9am and had a full day. I told them it would be exactly that. The students for this first class are Insomniac, Steve D, hpetty, and JohnsonMBrandon.

The guys did a great job today. The design phase can be pretty tough, but they did fine. We had a little hang up on the seat template design, but got it straight and all is good. Here are few pics from my album.

Here is our load of walnut. It arrived about 12:30 Friday afternoon. Talking about just in time.

Monty working on his design. I would say he was working hard..... but that wouldn't work for referring to how Monty works.

Steve D stepping back and thinking hard. I thought I smelled something burning.

Brandon and Hugh laying it out.

It was a good first day. We are right on schedule for where I hoped we would be. The guys have some seat, template, and processing homework and have been checked off for doing the unsupported bandsaw cut I demonstrated at the show. It is a necessary thing that isn't too hard once you try it. It looks a little daunting at first. All 4 guys did just fine one their test peice. This cut is used to sculpt out some of the excess wood of the seat. Here is a quick pic from the Extravaganza album to show you what I'm talking about.

Thanks,

John

Looks like an adventuresome crew -- Great pics of "men at work"!! Of course I spent just as much time gawking at some of your shop features -- the Oliver, the new Woodtek shaper, and the best picture yet of your rising assembly table! I'm looking forward to your class next week and I'll be bringing my camera to document the event!

Nice job guys! How often is the class? Once a week or once a month? I'm already looking forward to the next update.

Re: WG Maloof Rocker Class Day 1

It isn't evenly spaced. The next class is in two weeks. So my weekends are booked. Jointery class next Saturday, shop time for Brandon and Hugh on Suday, Rocker Day 2 class the following Saturday.

Check out the calendar to see when the classes are. I made sure it was on there.

Thanks,

John

Re: WG Maloof Rocker Class Day 1

It was a great start... it's hard to believe how much of the design we got done in a relatively short period of time. Now I've got to go work on my homework assignment!

Great start. I wondered why the site has been so quiet today

Re: WG Maloof Rocker Class Day 1

Your right Cathy, it did seem awful quiet around here today.

Looks like everyone had a great time today designing their rockers. I look forward to seeing the next installment.

How is you solid wood chest of drawers coming along John?

Re: WG Maloof Rocker Class Day 1

It's coming I've got most of the inner framework mortised and dovetailed. I'll have the case done by this weekend hopefully. Gotta get ready for the jointery class too.

Thanks,

John

Re: WG Maloof Rocker Class Day 1

Thanks for the post John. Glad someone is watching out for those guys.
And I'll be monitoring the resulting WGD tool purchases closely

Enviously,
