Road Trip!

I am going to make a run up to The Hardwood Store of NC this morning. I reckon I better stock up on some lumber to play with while this site is down for upgrades.

I should be up there by about 11 or so if anyone happens to be in the neighborhood. I'll be the guy in the back of the warehouse stumbling around in a daze and drooling on the wood.

Hey, DL if you're running up I-40 give me a call on your way back 919-422-2760. I am right off the interstate near Clayton. We can meet and chat. Dave

Re: Road Trip!

Dave, I am primarily looking to get some sheet goods along with some lumber and I know The Hardwood Store of NC carries the sheet goods. Is there any place closer to Johnston County that sells sheet goods? Maybe I could head up that direction instead.

Re: Road Trip!

Raleigh Hardwoods sell sheet goods, and solid stock. Capital city lumber has lumber. Even East Wake Hardwoods is closer than Gibbsonville. But you will probably find your best prices and selection in Gibbsonville. Check the Wood Suppliers list and call some of those places before you decide where to head. Inventory varies. I have to run to Four Oaks this morning for an hour or two, but then I have nothing planned. Call me, I'll be on the road very soon. Dave

Question Re: Road Trip!

Stock up D L so you can make something nice and post pictures for us. Good luck in your searches. While we're on sheet goods, does anybody know of a place around Forest City, maybe off hwy 74, that sells surplus/seconds hardwood plywood? Someone told me some sketchy info a while back and I haven't been able to find out any details.

Ozzie-x, The place you're looking for is called "The Round-Up Store" in Shelby. It's on the south side of US 74 about 1/2 mile east of the WalMart, and opposite the Big Lots store. I've purchased 3/4" Birch at $36/sheet recently and it was fine for shop cabinets or work where only one side was exposed (I'd put it at B-2 or B-3). In 3/4", they also have poplar, red oak, knotty pine, cherry, walnut and mahagony (latter are about $75/sheet). They also have some 1/4", 1/2" and even some 1" stock. Look over carefully before you buy. As I recall, tey are only open until Noon on Saturdays.

As a follow-up thought, I assume you know about Gennett Lumber in Asheville where you can get 1st quality hardwood plywoods. 3/4" B-2 veneer-core Birch is $55 a sheet. They are on the Wood Suppliers List in the left margin.

Re: Road Trip!

Thanks Rob, I'll try to get by there next time I go to Charlotte. Yes, I've gotten a lot of stuff at Gennett's, but was looking for a deal.

Re: Road Trip!

Well, I managed to drag home 63 bf of lumber from East Wake Hardwood today. Picked up a little ash, med BE maple, QSWO, red oak, walnut, cherry, and poplar. At least now I will have something on the shelf to turn to when I want or need to make something. I also picked-up some 1/4 and 3/4 red oak ply from Raleigh Hardwood. As an added bonus I had the opportunity to stop by Clayton on my way home to do a face to face meeting with our very own Dave "The Grand Master-O-Scrap" O'Nan. Dave is really a great guy and it was a pleasure meeting him.
