Recycling Nuts and Bolts???
Hello all,
As I have admired the pics of everyone's shops it is also a constant reminder to me that I really need to clear out the one I am using. It is the shop of my deceased father. He gave the term "pack rat" a whole new meaning. I really don't know what half of this stuff is and not sure as to it value if any. But the one thing I know for sure is that there must be thousands of nuts and bolts in there. Does anyone have a clue as to what I can/should do with these things? Are there people who collect this stuff or maybe a metal salvage yard or even a landfill? A little direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Dawn, when did you become Bob? I don't know about the question you asked.

Re: Recycling Nuts and Bolts???
Cathy,
That was just a little joke that happened in the chat room and has carried over into some of my posts.... I believe it was DL Ames and Insom, that were in the chat room one night and was teasing me about Bob (Villa). http://ncwoodworker.net/forums/showt...12130#poststop
This is where it starts. This should get you up to speed.

Re: Recycling Nuts and Bolts???
Dawn,
I recently went through the same exercise dealing with my Inlaw's estate with an old house and tinkerer's basement shop with 10 multi drawer plastic organizers full of stuff. 90% of the nuts, bolts, screws, straightened out bent nails (depression kids!), etc went into coffee cans and were donated to the Habitat for Humanity store. I bought a few clear fishing tackle organizers for ~$3 each at Wallyworld and put the things that I will use in them. Beats going through 119 little drawers to find that one nut or screw and they're portable with each compartment sealed when the lid is closed.
One thing I noted was that there were very few Phillips head style screws in his collection. He was a traditional kind of fellow! We miss him.

Re: Recycling Nuts and Bolts???
Dawn,
My vote would be to save as much as you have resonable room for. (I don't want to even think about the number of trips I have made out to the local HW store to pick up a specific fastener!) The guys at Ace HW are great to talk to but they nickle and dime you to death for simple nuts, bolts, washers etc.
To come to think about it I still have a couple of coffee cans full of bent nails from my grandfather's garage - emptied back in 1971!

Re: Recycling Nuts and Bolts???
Dawn (aka Bob), I agree with the others on sorting through what you have and keeping what you think you might need in the future. Stuff like nuts and bolts can get awful expensive.
Other than donating them to someplace like Habitat for Humanity you might also want to consider buying yourself a slingshot. Nuts and bolts make great slingshot ammo in case you ever need to get back at Insom for calling you Bob

Super Idea DL !!!!! Your genius goes far beyond the scope of woodworking.
