Question This Old House Magazine

Just received an offer from "Nahm" for 10 issues for $6 + $3 (shipping & handling) = $9. I have never read a single issue.

Anyone subscribe? If so, is it worth $9?

Roger

Re: This Old House Magazine

Gosh, thats a tough question.

I subscribe, have on and off over the years.

Its full of ideas. Some tips and LOTS of adds. I like how it covers landscaping and home building/decorating in one magazine.

I also refuse to pledge to PBS, so this is my way to send my money to support the show.

If you like advanced home owner ideas and some guidance, I think its great.

It falls way short of say, Fine Homebuilding or JLC.

Re: This Old House Magazine

I have bought a few, haven't subscribed. I would say for that price it is worth it. I think it comes out every other month.

Roger---------I used to subscribe, when I had ideas of restoring an old house. I enjoyed the subscription, lot of good articles about restoration. If you are into that kind of thing it is well worth the price mentioned.

My recommendation -- Keep your money and watch the TV show to get your fix. The magazine is pretty (looking), but not very useful for anything of true value.

Just my two cents ...

Re: This Old House Magazine

I'll second Jeremy's opinion. I'm a big fan of the show, but the magazine is a bit lacking. Big on showing final results, but ZERO info on the how-to side of things. I subscribed for a year after thumbing through one in the doctor's office about 2 years ago. Needless to say, I was very disappointed and did not renew the subscription after a year.

If you're looking for how-to around the house type stuff, try Family Handyman. I'm very impressed with this one so far. $12.95/10 issues.
Magazine subscriptions at 5.95 per year

Roger is the second person very recently that has said this. I personally put them wherever I can to get my wife to look at them as there is no better way to get new tools than her actually asking for me to build something !

The problem is she knows this

Re: This Old House Magazine

I've had the sub for years now. When it is about to expire I wait until they send me their 'FINAL OFFER!' and re-up. Just happened this month and I got 10 issues for 10 bucks. At those prices it's worth getting just for something to read that relates to our hobby....'Ask Norm' and 'Ask TOH' are cool, Tom Silva replies to questions up his alley, Roger Cook and Rich Trethewey (sp?) answer questions relating to their specialties....

Tool reviews, this and that...yes, I find it worth that price.

Re: This Old House Magazine

Thanks for the input. I called in the sub and saved 39¢ for stamp. Since I never watch the show, it has to be worth $9.

Just think zimman, someday you may qualify for the "Senior Discount"

Roger

I do that as well. IRS auctions had a jointer I wanted to bid on, and I made sure that the picture of it stayed up on the computer almost continuously. Unfortunately, no response.

What made it worse, is the thing sold for not much less than a new one.

Re: This Old House Magazine

Ok, I'm getting the picture . . . and the magazine. Just signed up for Woodworkers Journal for $12.97

Apparently I have given out my name and address too many times. Now I'm flooded with mag offers. But $1 or $2 an issue via subscription is a lot cheaper than the $5 to $8 I pay off the rack

Roger (who is putting time and money into the shop, but not much is coming out )

That's very true Roger! I assumed you wanted to end on the high note of the piece in the calendar
