Knotty Pine

A local lady is going to remodel a kitchen and den, both are paneled with
3/4 knotty pine .It,s original from the early 60,s and has the classic
dark orange color.I can have it if I remove it. Is it worth my time and
does it have any salvage value. I

That really depends on what your time is worth. If you have the time by all means, it's like almost free wood. The finish is probably shellac and that can be removed easily. I don't think knotty pine has a high dollar value new, so re-claimed probably wouldn't either. I look forward to other opinions on this subject.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Knotty Pine

I'd have to agree with Dave's question about your time. You didn't say what you wanted to do the the material you are able to salvage. If it's for resale, you might not get what your time is worth. If you want to build something with the wood you reclaim, you might think in terms of what you would spend if you purchased new material... so, is your time worth the amount you save? If you just like the look of the stuff and have a project of some sort in mind, then go for it.

Re: Knotty Pine

If you can afford the time, it is a zero-sum investment and if you've got a place to use it immediately, then go for it. However, it would not have much resale value.

Re: Knotty Pine

It sounds to me like you would be doing each other a favor. Anything you built with it in the futrue would add another story to the project. You could say "and this used to be Mrs. so and so's wall."

Re: Knotty Pine

Owen299 - Nab it, you'll be helping out a friend and you'll have a bunch of free dry pine for projects. Build her something useful out of it and give it to her as a thank you. She'll never forget you and it will always be something special to her. Go for the good feeling... it’s much more valuable than money.

You could always plan it down to remove the finish; just make sure you pulled all the nails and other objects out of it first.

Re: Knotty Pine

Jeff,

Looks like you're the one who has the right idea. We should think of a friend before we worry about money. Thanks

Re: Knotty Pine

Thanks for everyones input. my son (14) and I will pull it off this weekend it should a good project. The idea of a gift bookshelf or a small end table sounds like a great way to thank her . I would also have a great excuse when the wife asks why i'm in the workshop .
