How do I get rid of wood scraps?

How do I get rid of wood scraps? As I was finally sorting my wood and scraps to load load up my lumber rack, I found a lot of scraps that will never have a use, plus some things that I have to get rid of fpr space reasons. Don't worry it is all junk.

I don't have wood burning fireplace, so that rules out that scheme. I had been putting some of long and thin scraps into 40 gal trash can but that is now full.

How do I get rid of this stuff?

Thanks, Steve

Re: How do I get rid of wood scraps?

Use it. Do you turn wood on a mini/midi lathe? 1.) You can use for accents and inlays in your turned items. 2.) If you don't turn, build a game board using the small scraps as an inlay between the squares. 3.) Do a complicated intrasia project. 4.) Any jigs you ever wanted to build? 5.) Have children? Build a detailed train using the scraps for the bars, chimneys, wheels, fences, windows,... Use 2X4s as the body of the car(s) and glue the scrap pieces on the body. Ideas anyhow...

know anyone with a wood chipper? Mulch it and toss it in a flower bed or behind the house somewhere. After a few days it will probably blend in with everything else.

Re: How do I get rid of wood scraps?

Thanks for the ideas guys. I've already taken the scraps that I can use. The rest is now in the back of my SUV. Either to find someone who has a chipper or to the dump

Re: How do I get rid of wood scraps?

Here in Durham, we have "Yard Waste" pickup once a week, anything under 3ft long and 6in in diameter and not PT. I don't know if that's an option where you live.

Lucky for me the kids down the street are buidling a Fort...So, no dump runs for me.

I would call the town, Apex usually has a yard pickup the day after trash pickup. Or you can take it to the dump..

Re: How do I get rid of wood scraps?

I dump mine in the wood around the house, I will probably kick myself in a few years when the piles of PT scraps are still there. Pressure treated lumber scraps is about all I toss out, I find a use for most small pieces of any decent hardwood. Does it cost to dump at the Apex dumps? If so you are welcome to my woods. Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: How do I get rid of wood scraps?

Steve,

As long as it isn't PT, you can unload here

I use my scraps for starter wood in fireplace. Of course, most of my projects are 90 percent scraps and 10 percent usable

If it's oak or hickory, mix some chunks in with charcoal and use it in the barbque grill, thats what I do anyways.

Re: How do I get rid of wood scraps?

The dump off Durant Rd in Raleigh works for me if I can't give it away (which I usually can't). When I had a fireplace I'd just burn it.

By the time I call them scraps they fit in the garbage can. On the other hand my "off-cuts" are getting out of control!

Re: How do I get rid of wood scraps?

In a bizzare twist of irony I just picked up this book at a library sale in burlington today...

Woodworking with Scraps by Percy Blandford

There is a whole book dedicated to us scrap'r folk!
