Glue ?

I need a glue with an open time longer than Titebond. Something in the 15-30 minute range but works easy like Titebond. Any suggestions?

Re: Glue ?

Dolan,
Did you check out the Titebond website?

Although they state Titebond III has an open time of 10 minutes, my experience is that it's longer than that.

Re: Glue ?

Have you considered Titebond II Extend Wood Glue? They claim it "passes type II water resistance and has a slower spped of set".

Re: Glue ?

Polyurethane glue has a longer open time, but is rather messy. Plastic resin glues have a very long open time, but can be costly and a litle more diffficult to work with (mixing, dispensing etc.)

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Glue ?

I use the Titebond II Extend Wood Glue and it works great about 15 to 20 min. open time

Roger
I was using Titebond III gluing up pieces for a checkerboard and was working as quick as a could and by the time (not more than 7-8 minutes) I got the strips all glued and in place I had to take a deadblow hammer to get a strip to move.

I will look for the Titebond extend glue and give it a try unless I can find something else.

Re: Glue ?

Last week I just used Titebond III (Ultimate) to glue up a rocking chair I am restoring. (Was a three day process). I had to glue the back (head rail?) portion back together as it had delaminated into the 3 original pieces. Because of the bow needed, I could not glue all at once so did the first two on day one, along with the bottom assy; Glued the last lamination on the top the second day; and finished assembling the back/arms (i e top parts) on the third. The first day was very humid, and it seemed to set up and "Tack" very quickly (less than 5 min), which surprised me because it is supposed to have twice the time of Titebond II. In essence, when I put the two laminations together, thats how they stayed. Almost like contact cement!! No amount of persuasion with clamp or mallet was going to move them. I did get squeeze out as I clamped tho. However, the second day the humidity dropped and the set time was longer (probably closer to 10 min). The third day was the same as the second.
I don't know if the short time on the first day was because of the humidity or because it was the first use out of a new bottle (manufactured in Oct 06). I've has similar experiences with Titebond II in the past, but was attributing to the dryness/absorbtion rates of different pieces (i. e. quarter sawn vs plane sawn, ply vs solid wood). Now I am thinking humidity also may be a factor.
The main difference I have noticed during the actual application between the II & III is the color. The III seems to be closer to the color of light natural wood.
I do know I'll be looking for another alternative before I again laminate 1/4" thick by 4 1/2" wide by 23" long pieces!! I needed the water resistant properties for this piece, tho.

Just my experiences

Re: Glue ?

Just a tought - I seem to recall reading somewhere about putting yellow glue in the fridge to slow down set time. I never tried it but it seems resonable. I wouldn't get it so cold that it would freeze though.
