Re: Shop Vac

Wow, you can get recommendations all over the board from cyclones to single machine systems. What kind of budget do you have, do you want it piped to all machines or portable and hooked up to only the machine your using? How often and much will you use it? I have heard good thing about the HF unit, I have a small Jet that I like, the shop built cyclones are awesome as are the purchased ones. I could go on and on. A little more specifics would help for a better recommendation.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Shop Vac

The harbor freight Dust Collector is probablly the better option if you are on a real budget. If you have neighbors close by I don't think you would want to leave any DC outside under cover. The only thing I would be concerned about is moisture getting to the DC if outside under cover. I haven't really heard a DC yet that is any quiter than a shop vac or something like that....so they do make a little bit of noise. If money is not an issue than the cyclone is probably the way to go.

Re: Shop Vac

I'm very pleased with my small Jet 650 CFM. Very quiet, cheap bottom bag and cleanable top hard canister. Godd for single machine use or with BG's

Re: Shop Vac

If you are planning additional tools such as a planer and jointer, then I would recommend that you step up and get a higher capacity dust collector such as this 2 HP model with a 1 Micron dust canister for about $500 from Grizzly. At 74 decibels, it is relatively quiet (less than most shop vacuums) and has very good suction/flow characteristics. I'd also recommend running 6" PVC for duct and installing blast gates for each tool to control flow where needed. Check the Link library for Bill Pentz' outstanding website and for information on making your own blast gates.

Re: Shop Vac

When I was planning mine up in NH, the guy in Woodcraft up there started by saying "budget $1,000 for dust collection" and he wasn't far off. I spent a total of $800, I didn't need to include a shop vac, which he was including. The pipe, fittings brackets etc soon add up. I would also recommend getting the ceiling mounted fine air filter, it makes such a difference. A lot of the time when you need to do sanding or a small job you won't bother to turn on or connect the DC so the air handler plays a big part. About 600 on the two main pieces and the rest on fittings

Re: Dust Collection

Bram,

I renamed the thread dust collection so that others may tune in a bit better. Definitely plan for current and future needs, you will have a lot of money tied up in the DC and ducting so you don't want to undersize either of those. There have been several recent threads that have good information. Click the search menu and enter dust collection and you will find a wealth of information. We'll be happy to try and help size for your specific needs if you provide some more details.

Re: Dust Collection

Bram, I am not one to advise one with no set budget, mine is always set at the bottom Here is a good thread on cyclones, which work very well: http://ncwoodworker.net/forums/showt...ust+collection

And here is a wealth of info on the subject in general - Bill Pentz site:

http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm.

I like my Jet 1100, but I wish it was a little larger 2-3 HP instead of 1 HP.

Re: Dust Collection

Bram,
You can deff place it outside of your shop, I am going to do this to mine this summer. All you need to do is run your piping through the wall into a small building that holds your DC. I am going to insulate mine and put a blower in it that is activated when I turn on the DC. If you plan on expanding I would seriously look at a cyclone. NCPete and I are going to build a couple this summer, if you want to wait and build one with us your more than welcome. Also run 6in pipe. I have a couple really good suppliers if you cant find any and I will pick it up for you if you need me to. You will need a remote system to turn it on also if it is outside. JDS Or PennState have both wireless remotes or blast gate activated systems. Be blessed friend.

Re: Dust Collection

One note on having it outside is that you will take air from the shop and throw it outside. This could be a problem. First you will need some way to replace that air with an open vent or an open door to the outside. Also if you are heating or cooling your shop you would be throwing away that conditioned air.

I second the sugestion of checking out Bill Pentz website. There is a ton of info there. Everything you need to know about dust collection for the small shop. But take it with a grain of salt. Pentz has an alergic problem with wood dust and has very high expectations of what make a workable system.

Re: Dust Collection

I went with the 1029 Grizz. I have it hooked to 6 " main. I would say it works well with my setup. I've been thinking about changing the top bag to a cannister but now it's just a thought. Just my 2cents worth

Re: Dust Collection

I have the griz 1029 as well. I got some long hose to hook to my tools as I use them. If I had the patience, budget, space.. ect... I may have went with a cyclone, and piped it all in. But, I haven't. If you do alot, check out a cyclone. That Griz is just perfect for me, the weekend warrior.
