Just looking for a place to start . . .
Has anyone ever built a Doll House? My grandaughter would like one. Anyone have any tips, info., plans, whatever. Nothing to complicated. I've seen some that try to duplicate the Biltmore Estate!

Pete----------I have several doll house books. Two of them have graphed patterns for the parts. One is a 4 story, 16x25 x 31 1/2 H plus the roof. The other is 14"w x 21" deep x 45" tall.

The third one is a thicker book that includes plans for furniture also. The dimensions on that doll house are bigger than the other two. It is called "The Remember When" doll house.

They are for sale--pm if interested.

STAY AWAY!!!!
I built one for my mother 20 years ago, and never want to do it again. Unfortunately, with two girls, I will probably get stuck again.

My suggestion would be to buy one of the bare bones kits from Michaels or somewhere (made out of 1/4" plywood), and then dress it up with shop made accessories like shingles, siding, moldings, etc. You should be able to get wall paper and some specialty moldings online as well.

Good luck.

I seem to remember seeing a couple of books on dollhouses at the Woodworker's Supply Store on Capital Blvd (where the TWA meets). They also carry some of the accessories you might need if the doll house gets serious Time To Decorate That Doll House? We Ve Got The 1 / 12th Scale Furniture, Living Room Furniture

Turns out my DIL has a plan in mind. Fortunately she wants something pretty simple and very sturdy (the girls can be less than delicate at times). She wants something that can be played with and not fussed over. I'll check out the kits at Michaels but I'm not sure if 1/4" ply will be sturdy enough. LOML is pretty good with a paint brush so I think I'll end up just doing a simple plywood "box with a roof" and let her paint on the details.

Thanks for the input . . .

If you do build from scratch, I would suggest making a template and use your router to cut out doors and windows. When I tried using a jigsaw, it was nothing but futility trying to get them straight and to look right. 1/2 inch sandply or baltic birch would be pretty sturdy. As for the 1/4 inch ply, it isn't strong, but as you start to put the lap siding on, shingles, etc it sturdies up a lot. If you are going simple, I would do the 1/2 inch ply. My .02.

Yup - 1/2" ply. Going to keep it very simple. This will be a test doll house to see if the girls like it, play with it, and don't destroy it! If they like it I'll see about doing something fancier.
