a few simple guidelines, as I understand them:

1. must have been working sometime during the past five years.

2. must have some sort of definable/reasonable inability to work.

okay, that's only two guidelines

get a lawyer first.
theres a lot of paperwork that has to be filled out right to get it started.
i've been trying for a year and the judge has mine in his hands now.
remember, any lawyer will not take the case if they don't think they will not win.
the most they can charge is $5000 or 25% of the back pay she will get.

Everyone that I've ever talked to it took 3yrs to get. And thats what it took my x. I say go on down and sign up if they let you.I tried after I had my heart attack. Lady ask if I was over 70 and could I work.Well I've got 22yrs till I hit 70, at the time didn't know if I could work or not.She said BYE. I wish you the best of luck. But you do have to stick with it. Just don't give up!

Michael, It depends on the circumstances and you didn't give much info. If you are receiving disability benefits on your own earnings record, your wife may be entitled to receive a benefit. See: http://www.ssa.gov/dibplan/dfamily2.htm

SSA has a pretty good website, so if the above link doesn't fit your situation, look around a bit. If you don't find an answer, a field rep can answer your question.
