Did you have to provide a credit card and your checking account? I don't have a problem with the credit card, but it seems to be a bit much when they want both especially with all of the electronic breakins where account numbers and so forth have been stolen or compromised? Or, am I just being paranoid? |

When I set up a paypal account to buy and accept payments I had to give out that information.

Plus many credit cards offer fraud protection ... which is added security (or at least protection).
One recommendation for safe online buying ... get a separate credit card only for online stuff (don't use your debit card even though it has a Visa logo). This way worst case it ever is stolen, they will only hit the credit card, which is likely covered by the card company. |

I also set up a Paypal account where I did have to give "sensitive information". You need to do that with paypal in order to transfer funds back and forth from your banking account.
Just be aware of spoof emails that appear to be from either ebay or paypal wanting sensitive information to "verify" your account. Neither one will ask for that information in an email.
Go to ebay site and research all the information on buying and selling security. I did get a spoof email a few years ago that appeared to be from ebay but I knew they did not ask for that kind of information in emails. I reported the email and they confirmed it was spoof.

Just say pay with PayPal and logon to PayPal to send money when an auction ends! |

Jerry That's a great point, Jerry is making. This goes to eBay, PayPal, your bank, anything ... none of them would really ever contact you via email with a problem like that ... and if they did, I still wouldn't use the link in the email to do anything about it (call instead). "Spoof" scams are real ... so just don't be fooled and use good common sense (and if you lack that, forward me the email and I'll use some of mine ) |

Give us a report if you decided to do it. I've neither bought nor sold on Ebay, although I would like to. Just can't bring myself to provide that info online. And I'm well aware of how easy it is to obtain personal info online. Like others, I have used county GIS to research property, property tax value, satellite views, and owners name and address. I have also Googled telephone numbers from classified ads and Craigslist to find name and address. It's so easy it's scary
Welcome to 2007!
Roger

She set her PayPal account up under an additional checking account and we keep little to no money in it until we buy something. Then we just transfer funds via online banking to cover any purchases. Or, am I just being paranoid? I use eBay a lot. When selling you have to pay a listing fee and a percentage of the sale. To buy/bid you need to have a useid. As you use the same ID for both types of transactions, they generally want that information. I had to provide that information when I got set up several years ago. Personally I have never had any problem with either service. PayPal or eBay.

Really watch out for the email scams - I report all I get to PayPal. I actually use PayPal to buy a lot of things over the internet - lots of companies accept it.

It's printed on the checks, which is another of those things that we have little control over.

However, I had no problems giving a gold card to a server making LESS than minimum wage, who took it out of sight for a number of minutes, everytime I paid for a dinner!
