I need a new camera - I'm not a photographer so just something that will take a halfway decent pic and not have to change the freaking batteries after 6 pictures. Got any ideas, I'm clueless.

Thanks

I've got a Sony Cyber-shot 5.1 mega-pixel. It takes great pics, and has enought features that I could do great things with it if I would sit down and read the owners manual, but without it's still a easy camera to use.

Similar to this one, mines a few years older
Cyber-shot® DSC-H2 Digital Camera

BTW, it was a X-Mas gift for me and my wife

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Ok that's a nice camera, but don't they have one with a big red button I push and it takes a picture? Something simple and idiot proof and built out of steel?

Thanks

If you find one like that, please let me know - I need it to! Oh, and it magically needs to focus and really only provide the needed amount of flash - not so much that you cannot tell what kind of wood is in the picture.

My son just purchased a Panasonic Lumix for $189 at the Orlando, Flordia Costco. Here's a link to the model he bought:
Amazon.com: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1S 5MP Compact Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver): Electronics

The reason I think you would like this camera is that it is easy to use. The mode dial has a "red heart" symbol for point-and-shoot pictures; this takes all the guess work out, and provides a good picture for nearly all situations.

The reason I recommend this model is because it has 10X Optical Zoom; most camera's have 3X Optical, and some digital. Another reason is that most digital camera's do not have a big enough memory card. The Costco deal my son got included a free 2GB card; this is a very big card. Last, but not least, this camera has a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery and charger.

I currently own an older FZ4S Panasonic Lumix with 12X Optical Zoom, that has been a real joy to use.

Jeff, FWIW I found that with my Sony and Kodak digital cameras I get 3-5x battery life from Energizer E2 Lithium batteries than I ever got from the rechargables. Not real cheap at ~$8 for four; cheapest place to get them is BJ's at $16 for ten. Ebay can be a good place to get a camera. LOML picked up a Kodak 6.1 MP, 50x zoom, with more features than I can figure out, with 2GB memory card, for ~$250 including shipping. It was a reconditioned model, and no issues have come up, so it was a good deal as all of this new is ~$475. As always with Ebay: caveat emptor. Concerning ease of use: any camera can be set up on auto, and I usually take better pics that way, but having other features can be handy. HTH

Jeff.. I recently upgraded my camera. Therefore, I have 2 now. You want one? I can get a picture of the camera and what type it is when I get home today. This camera is several years old, but IMO still operates very well. Batteries are recharable and removable. They hold a charge reasonably well, but you may want to get a new set. I think it is an olympus, but not 100% sure. Did I mention it's point and shoot?

I have the Canon Rebel XT digital-costs about $900. The "freakin" batteries will last some time. Whether you are a photographer or not, it is a great camera. You can change lenses. I also have a 76-300 zoom with image stablization. I took zoom photos of my son kneeboarding off the back of my boat running wide open in a turn and the photos come out clear (when you can manage to keep the object in the view while bouncing around). The problem with the Canon (the current one is 10 mega pixel) is that the lowest resolution is too high for this website.

I'll take it I'm not looking for anything fancy just something I can point and shoot.

Hey, $free.99 is the best buy out there Jeff but if it doesn't work out, I did a ton of research before I bought my wife a new camera.

Canon loyalist that I am, I got a Fuji F31fd. We didn't want to have to lug around an SLR, but every P&S type camera, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, etc, were trying to compete on pixels and being an 1/8" smaller. They pretend to compete on lenses, but the lenses on the P&S digitals are all fair, none are great.

The Fuji F30 and F31 are the only P&S digitaqls that actually takes good pictures in low light where a flash is useless. Up to ASA1600, and fair at ASA3200.

The 31fd (face detection) also recognizes up to 10 or 20 faces in a busy picture and meters/focuses on them if you like. Cute feature, but it was the low light capability that sold us. There isn't another P&S that comes close, and when you try to take your kid's picture at a dark school concert, only the bulky SLR's can compete with this one:
Fujifilm FinePix F31fd Digital Camera Review - Fuji Digital Cameras

Unfortunately it's closer to 399 than it is to free.99

Todd

Oh yeah, it will also take over 500 pictures on a battery charge.

Jeff... this camera is a Olympus Camedia C3020 Zoom camera. It is in great condition, and should do the job for you. It runs off of AA batteries. Did I mention it's free? All I ask that if it doesn't work out for you to pass it along.

It comes with a 128M and a 16M smart media card.

Let me know
